Want to buy new construction in Blaine, MN? A guide to choosing the best builder!

So you've decided you want to build your new home!  While the idea of new construction is appealing to many buyers, the process of choosing a builder can be tough.   Since building and purchasing a home is usually the largest investment that most people make in their lives, it is important to be well informed about the builder you ultimately choose.   

It is important to interview several home builders and ask them all the same series of questions. This will allow you to make a solid and equal comparison of the home builders to ensure you hire the one that is best for you and your new home. Here's a list of questions to ask your potential Blaine home builder during the interview process:

Could I have a list of references? You will want to ensure that your builder gives you a list of references of other homes they have built. You will need to call the references yourself and ask them a variety of questions as well, including:

  • How is the overall craftsmanship and workmanship of your completed home?
  • Was the work completed on time or within a reasonable time frame from the estimated time of completion?
  • Were there any problems through the building process or after the home was completed?
  • What level of customer service did the home builder offer?
  • Do you have warranty?
  • Were there any issues with the home and how were those issues handled by the builder.

Do you have a nearby existing work site I could come to? By going to an existing work site, and by going unannounced without an appointment, you can really tell a lot about the company and their business practices, as well as their level of craftsmanship. The work site should be clean and organized, the workers working and looking as if they too are organized and know what they should be doing.

What is your warranty program like? You will want to find out about the warranty that will come with your home, how long it is in effect for and what it will, and won't, cover.

If there are any issues through any of the stages of building a home, how will you handle them? Ask how the builder deals with issues that arise through every phase of the home, from beginning to end.  Your potential Blaine, MN home builder should be willing to work with you to help address any issues that may arise.

Are there any homes in the nearby area that are completed that your company has built? Find out what homes in your area have been built by the builder to allow you to see the final project.

What is your quote for a finished home? Get a quote in writing from the home builder for the home and plans you have. That price could vary and your builder should warn you of potential unforeseeable costs that may not be included in their quote.

How long for completion of my home? You will want to have an approximated time line that the builder can complete your home to ‘move in ready'.

When you've interviewed several home builders and spoken to their references, it should be much easier to reach a decision on which Blaine, MN home builder to hire. The builder you hire should be willing and able to answer all of your questions.
