Preparing for an Ice Storm in Lexington Kentucky
The forecast for tonight is snow changing to sleet and finally freezing rain. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest where in my 58 years of experience I remember one time when freezing rain caused a problem.
I have been here only a couple of years and this will already by my third ice storm if it comes to fruition.
These are the things I have learned about preparing for an ice storm in Lexington.
First, a quarter of an inch of ice causes major havoc. Trees become peanut brittle like and they do not leave a sweet taste. So DO NOT leave your car parked under a tree or plan to build a snowman near a tree.
Second, when preparing for an ice storm expect the power to go out for at least two days and probably more. So stock up on batteries, make sure the gas fireplace insert is working correctly and dig out the extra blankets.
Third, find your ear plugs. Your neighbors who cannot live without electricity will start up their generators and you will get to live with the constant roar of electricity being produced by gas powered guzzlers.
Fourth, expect the schools to be closed. This is a great opportunity to build some special memories with your children. Make this a half full glass day. Children love to miss school and parents can build some great memories if they dare to take a day or two off to spend playing games and just talking with the children.

Well, this one didn't turn out to be much of one did it. Gone by noon. But school here in Scott County closed today AND tomorrow!

Hi Erby,
Yes, the storm was over by noon but unfortunatly the ice will still be here a while. Stay warm and do not crawl on any icy roofs.

Warm, probably not. Nature of the beast being outside.
Icy roofs, you bet crawling on them is NOT on my agenda. I like my body whole and sound.
