Yahoo! Video Going Bye-Bye, Hello Flickr Video

By
Education & Training with Retired Executive Director of Education at eXp Non-Licensed

If you're into video like me and you've posted or hosted videos on Yahoo! Video, you might want to read the following message.  This was sent to me earlier since I have content on their site, I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up.  If you know anyone esle who might have videos up on Yahoo, it's not too late to get them this message.  They have until 3/14/2011.  If folks don't know about this, they'll lose their videos.

"Dear Yahoo! Video user,

After careful consideration, we will be removing all general user-generated content upload capability and user-uploaded video from Yahoo! Video. As a result, your videos, user profiles, ratings, favorites, and playlists will no longer be available after March 14, 2011. User video content from Yahoo! Video that remains embedded on third party sites will no longer be playable after March 14, 2011.

Available on your profile page is a software utility that will allow you to download the videos you have uploaded to Yahoo! Video to your computer through March 14, 2011. You can find your profile by clicking on the 'My Video' tab or going to http://video.yahoo.com/mypage

Once you download your videos, you may choose to upload them to another site such as Flickr, which now allows video uploads. You can find out more here: http://www.flickr.com/explore/video.

Thanks for your understanding and thanks for being a part of Yahoo! Video.
If you have any questions about this change, please visit our FAQ section, or contact Customer Care."

The Yahoo! Video Team

Getting the word out and helping others is what the Internet, Blogging, and Social Media is all about.  I'd feel guilty if I didn't post this on my AR Blog and especially if some of you lost your videos.  So you can either go on over to yahoo video right now, save your stuff, or you can go on about your day.

Thanks for stopping by and reading.  Happy Holidays~

Brad,

Thanks for the update. I was planning to learn "video" over the downtime in the holiday season, so this is timely.

Brad. The safest place for videos is YouTube in my opinion. Video is what they do and they are HUGE!

I feel for the folks that will lose their content. It's the risk we all take when storing stuff in the cloud.

Boy, I can see where this could become a huge problem for people. Not me....no video yet. I imagine many people won't see this in time. Such a shame. Thanks for the post.

I had one video up that was irreplaceable, I lost the original when my hard-drive crashed in New Orleans at NAR.  I went in and downloaded it and now have it in a couple safe places.  It was a short video of my brother and I reconnecting (thanks to ActiveRain) after more than 40 years.  That video is priceless to me, I'm glad I was able to retrieve it before they cleaned house.  :-)

I get the feeling that with a few more moves like this, Yahoo will be about as relevant as Excite or Lycos.

I think Youtube Is the way to go - works with iphones and such and integrates well into sites and the like.... plus you can throw flip cam vids up easily.

I'd move them to YouTube instead of Flickr.   I  think Google has a better chance of staying around for a longer time.  I guess it also shows why one should keep the original files too.

Hi Brad, thats great that you were able to get a copy of your video of your reunion with your brother. This is a good reminder that we should have a few copies our important items in a couple of places. All the best in the new year.

Whoever featured this at AR, thanks for helping to get the word out.  I'm getting some really nice grateful emails from members.

I do place nearly all my videos on Youtube, a few on Flickr, and even some on Facebook, but this notice made me question my recent post about storing everything on the cloud?!?  I see others are having those same thoughts and feelings as well.  Guess it's time to invest in some terabyte hard-drives!!  :-)

Life on the web is becoming a "hard drive!"  lol~

Good heads up.  Yahoo must be streamlining their business model.  Many of those videos will end up on Youtube where Google is struggling to make a profit as well.

I have always used Youtube (biggest is best) so no problem here.  I wouldn't want to have to worry about all my content, but a good heads up for all AR members.

That's an interesting move. I wonder how many video bloggers who already use Flickr will make the switch.

Hi Joan - good call.

Youtube is great, flickr is good, maybe even facebook, but at home on a hardrive or spare drive is also not too bad a recommendation.  :)
