The absolute beauty of an ice storm reminds me that natures harshness can produce stunning beauty.
I wonder though if one is living outside in the cold wet weather if they can appreciate the beauty of a Lexington Ice Storm.
Our momentary circumstances provide a filtering lens to our perceptions of life. For example:
Small children always get excited when it snows as they anticipate snowmen, snowballs and sipping hot chocolate. There older siblings my appreciate sleeping in on a day school is closed but are not overjoyed when asked to shovel the driveway.
Mom and Dad have to pay the heat bills, buy the snow tires and drive on the treacherous roads so snow's beauty can be dimmed by the reality of the added expense and time drained from harsh weather.
As we approach this season of celebrations it is good to remember that many people are living through circumstances and conditions that may cause their life filtering lenses to view life much differently than you are experiencing.
For those who are suffering because of illness, a loss of job or loved one, or just lifes unseemingly endless hard knocks let me suggest you make yourself find some people who have a diferent lens. Hanging out with pity partiers is not a good way to lift oneself out of the doldrums.
