One of the reasons I love Real Estate is because you just never know what you're going to walk into when you enter a house. Take for example, the day I opened the utility room doors to find a group of about six braziers hanging from the clothes rack. My buyers and I had a fun conversation after that little revelation!
I've seen everything from unmade beds to kid's pictures on the walls (major no-no) to the most beautiful homes and the most tragic of situations. There is one practice, however, that I think is the ultimate no-no when it comes to selling your house. And it's something I never would have thought of myself. Oh...it's also something I discovered by accident the other day when Diane and I were over at a friend's house. We were sitting around the kitchen visiting when the lady of the house opened the freezer to get some ice cream. When she opened the door my eyes about popped out of my head.
Yes folks, that's a bag of money in the door. She actually had a bag of money in her freezer door. And it wasn't just a little bit of money. It was a LOT of money! I asked her why in the world she had a bag of money in her freezer door and she told me that she always kept a stash of cash there because no thief would ever think to look in the freezer. Uh, okay. I'm pretty sure that among the thief network in the world, the idea of hiding money in the freezer or under the mattress or in the cookie jar or anywhere else in the house has already been discussed and figured out.
In my opinion, hiding money in your freezer is the number one no-no when selling your house. And why is that? Because people sometimes open drawers, look in cabinets and yes, even open the freezer. And when you're showing a house to potential buyers, that money could be gone in a flash. You have to remember that not everyone has high morals. And you also have to remember that the temptation to do something you know is wrong, like take someones stash of cash from their freezer, can be extremely tempting. And remember this too. Real Estate folks are professional. We do everything we can to make sure we keep an eye on our buyers. But we can be taken advantage of too. Try as we might, a "Fast Eddie" kind of a person could have that money gone and stashed and we would never know it.
So if you are selling your home and you have a stash of cash in the freezer...No wait, if you are selling your home and have a stash of cash ANYWHERE in your house, remove it! And make sure your credit cards and business information is out of sight and locked up. And that goes for lots of other stuff too. But especially for cash! Because cash can be taken quickly, hidden easily and spent quickly.
And that will not make for a happy home seller!
