The Number One No-No When Selling Your House

By
Real Estate Agent with McGraw Realtors

One of the reasons I love Real Estate is because you just never know what you're going to walk into when you enter a house.  Take for example, the day I opened the utility room doors to find a group of about six braziers hanging from the clothes rack.  My buyers and I had a fun conversation after that little revelation!

I've seen everything from unmade beds to kid's pictures on the walls (major no-no) to the most beautiful homes and the most tragic of situations.  There is one practice, however, that I think is the ultimate no-no when it comes to selling your house.  And it's something I never would have thought of myself.  Oh...it's also something I discovered by accident the other day when Diane and I were over at a friend's house.  We were sitting around the kitchen visiting when the lady of the house opened the freezer to get some ice cream.  When she opened the door my eyes about popped out of my head.

Money in the freezer by Bob Haywood

Yes folks, that's a bag of money in the door.  She actually had a bag of money in her freezer door.  And it wasn't just a little bit of money.  It was a LOT of money!  I asked her why in the world she had a bag of money in her freezer door and she told me that she always kept a stash of cash there because no thief would ever think to look in the freezer.  Uh, okay.  I'm pretty sure that among the thief network in the world, the idea of hiding money in the freezer or under the mattress or in the cookie jar or anywhere else in the house has already been discussed and figured out.

In my opinion, hiding money in your freezer is the number one no-no when selling your house.  And why is that?  Because people sometimes open drawers, look in cabinets and yes, even open the freezer.  And when you're showing a house to potential buyers, that money could be gone in a flash.  You have to remember that not everyone has high morals.  And you also have to remember that the temptation to do something you know is wrong, like take someones stash of cash from their freezer, can be extremely tempting.  And remember this too.  Real Estate folks are professional.  We do everything we can to make sure we keep an eye on our buyers.  But we can be taken advantage of too.  Try as we might, a "Fast Eddie" kind of a person could have that money gone and stashed and we would never know it.

So if you are selling your home and you have a stash of cash in the freezer...No wait, if you are selling your home and have a stash of cash ANYWHERE in your house, remove it!  And make sure your credit cards and business information is out of sight and locked up.  And that goes for lots of other stuff too.  But especially for cash!  Because cash can be taken quickly, hidden easily and spent quickly.

And that will not make for a happy home seller!

Our local news just had a story on places NOT to hide valuables and the freezer was in the top 10.  We've also had warnings from our local board about "teams" going to open houses to rob them.  A "husband/wife" and sometimes extended family will show up, then split up and go in opposite directions in the house so the realtor can't watch them.  They are usually looking for drugs in the bathrooms and small jewelry/items that they can fit in pockets or handbags.  The woman usually carries an oversized handbag or tote.

I see seniors doing this sort of insanity from time to time.  Those who survived the Great Depression and WW2 tend to like having cash around.  As you say, these tricks are all known by thieves.  However, a couple of low risk places to hide money include the crawlspace and attic because they take too long to get to for a thief.

That puts new meaning to "cold cash"!  Indeed buyers look in refrigs and freezer -- many I've been with have to see if there is an ice maker.

How true, it is amazing what we sometimes/many times see in homes.

I don't know anyone who ever resorted to that method of making sure they had "cold cash" on hand but, I do know of someone who hid their diamond earrings in their freezer (wrapped in packaging and in a plastic bag), but then forgot they were there and accidentally threw them out when they defrosted it.

Pssss, Bob, a brazier is a kind of small barbecue grill. A brassiere is a ladies undergarment.

Last year when I took a listing a lady asked me "what should I do with my jewelry"? I suggested she put the valuables in a safe deposit box. The day I was there with the photographer the lady showed me her rubbermaid-type storage bins with $250,000 worth of jewelry. We held the listing off while she bought a gun safe and had it installed at her daughter's house. She didn't trust banks.

That's food for thought, Bob. I tell buyers to leave the valuables that they could live without on the kitchen counter so that those who are tempted don't have to go digging through their drawers.

As long as they are hiding things, do they also have a key to the house under one of those fake rocks near the front door??  LOL

Bob,

Can you say safety deposit box?  We always discuss removing any "easy to take" items from a house when we are listing it for sale.

All the best, Michelle

This brings new meaning to the term Cold Cash.  I reccomend people take all the valuables out of the home (small ones).  I also think people should put Nanny Cams in if they are worried about being ripped off.

Bob, is that what they mean by Cold Hard Cash!? Unbelievable! I'm assuming they had it hidden a little better than that...?

Hiding money is the freezer is no longer a secret since the FBI found $90k of lobbyist money in a former Louisianna congressman's freezer.  Media had a field day with the story.

I once showed a house that had a huge stack of cash setting out in plain sight on the kitchen bar.  Weird!
