For the 6th straight year, Denver International Airport or DIA as we call it has been again named by Business Traveler magazine as the "Best Airport in North America". DIA sits on 53 square miles of land which makes it the largest International Airport in the country.
In 2009, DIA and was ranked the 10th busiest airport in the entire world, accommodating 50,167,485 passengers. Opened in February of 1995, DIA is the main hub for local Frontier Airlines and the second largest hub for powerhouse United Airlines.
This past Wednesday DIA's Aviation Manager Kim Day said:
"DIA is honored to be the only airport ever to receive this award for six consecutive years,"

The main terminal building at DIA, with over 1.5 million square feet of space, was designed to remind you of the snow capped mountains that can be seen in the background. The roof is made from a teflon-coated fiberglass material that is as thin as a credit card. The architects of the roof used a similar design in a palace in Saudi Arabia, and the same material was used at the metrodome in Minneapolis (yes, that would be the same one that just collapsed!)
Because of the extensive amount of land mass, DIA has the largest solar farm at any airport in the United States. Denver's RTD system is planning a new leg of the light rail system to run from Downtown Denver to DIA which will, in my opinion, greatly enhance the commute to the airport for Denver residents.
