NAUGHTY AND NICE IN MINNESOTA!

man at postage machineToday, in St. Cloud MN, started overcast and windy with snow following about mid morning. By later this afternoon we were in the midst of a full fledged winter storm, with blowing snow, decreased visibility, and the prospect for single digit temps as the sun went down. Well we never saw the sun today, but we know from science class, it's up there. It's just hiding today.

We are getting our cards and packages out and I stopped by the main post office in downtown St. Cloud to get stamps and mail a stack of cards. I like the automatic machine they have, right inside the door, with a credit card slot and built-in scale. It reminds me of Robby The Robot except it doesn't talk. Here is the procedure; you hit the touch screen to order what you want, a book of stamps, mailing label for a package, etc.; then insert your credit card and okay the transaction; then, if you are done, hit EXIT, or answer the question "Do you want another transaction? Yes/No" No is the right answer.

This is what leads to the naughty and nice in Minnesota: I was behind a woman in line today, and after weighing 2 packages and paying for her postage, she went to the adjacent counter and affixed her postage, put them in the box and left quickly. This has happened before, and I tested the machine by hitting Yes, and following the prompts to get my purchase on the other persons credit card. It worked, but I stopped one step short and exited, going back in on my own card.

Today I had a moment of naughty thought. I looked at the attached scale and wondered if it went up the 185 pounds, and how much it would cost to mail myself to Arizona. After all, I had cold feet, and ice and snow to clear at home. Why not? Of course I was a non-regulation package, and would need "hand sorting". Liz and I don't like to fly because of the TSA "hand sorting", so that was one of the negatives. I opted to be nice and to stay in Minnesota. I cleared her out of the system to buy my stamps; to go home to my wife, the smell of Christmas cookies, and to shovel the drive while the dog ran through the fresh snow like it was some refrigerated drug!

When using the ATM, Stamp Machine, or paying bills online, Please Log Off or Exit fully to avoid having your data become vulnerable or your credit card used without your consent! Keep your Christmas Merry!

Steve, I like the idea of Arizona! My partner is driving there today & he said he hit 14 hours of blizzard conditions. He only made it to Cedar City, UT..

This is VERY good advice!  Sometimes we are moving too fast or have so much on our minds -- but we can't afford (in more ways than one!) to forget that last step!

For real? I wonder how many people don't realize that they aren't cleared out of the system when they leave. I always wonder that when I'm buying gas at the pump........ I hope that the gal today doesn't have to pay for many packages that weren't hers. And, I totally think that you should have sent yourself to Arizona. What a trip!

Don: It's all the climate change. We got snow all day yesterday and overnight. After I got the plow furrow done this morning it started snowing again. AZ sounds very good right now!

Cinnamon: I think most people do what I did, and exit out for the person ahead of us; but what if the person behind you is less honest, or just broke?

Lindsey: I would guess the computer times you out after a while, but if someone is right behind you, I know it stays open on your card for long enough! After last nights snow I am rethinking it:) Kidding.

Kathleen: I like going to the counter when I can, and talking to a human being, etc., but at this time of year the lines are long. Everyone is rushed, and that's when we make mistakes. Hawaii, I wish I had thought of that:) You're smart!

I love the kiosks, but always check and double check and triple check to be sure I really did exit out!  Leaving in a hurry sounds like something I would do!

Steve ~  This is really great information to share.  You would think of all the industries out there, the USPS would ensure the vendors they use are fully confidential and competent -- goodness!

Susan, I usually double check these things too, but I am getting a bit absent minded, and if I am on the phone while doing anything, I am bad!

Tish; I am sure the machine would exit out after a while, but for the customers convenience there is the option of doing repeated transactions. I would be uset if I had to start over for each package if I had 4-5 things to send. The next time I go I will time the system & see how long it stays "open" after the last transaction.
