Why NORAD Tracks Santa
For more than 50 years, NORAD and its predecessor, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) have tracked Santa’s flight.

Want to know where Santa is on Christmas Eve? Then check-in with NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command)! They’ll provide Santa’s location through the night, letting you know how close he is to your home.

The tradition began in 1955 after a Colorado Springs-based Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement for children to call Santa misprinted the telephone number. Instead of reaching Santa, the phone number put kids through to the CONAD Commander-in-Chief’s operations "hotline." The Director of Operations at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup, had his staff check the radar for indications of Santa making his way south from the North Pole. Children who called were given updates on his location, and a tradition was born.

As a child this was the hardest part of Christmas to wrap my head around. We have been using this for a few years now and it's a lot of fun.

I'm not sure about NORAD.  I'm pretty sure Santa is now employing Stealth technology.

You’re welcome, Jason! I hope your daughters have fun tracking Santa’s progress.

Hi Ellie. Though NORAD has been doing this since 1955, this is the first I’ve heard of it. I’m glad you’re family has been enjoying it for a while.

I dunno, Jerry. NORAD has the specs on Santa’s sleigh and seem confident that they can accurately track him. Plus, they use four high-tech systems to track Santa – radar, satellites, Santa Cams and fighter jets.
