Social Media Marketing - Are you a Personal Marketer or a Pest marketer??

By
Mortgage and Lending with Social Media - Infinity Home Mortgage Company, Inc

I don't consider myself the guru of social media networking or know all about the different marketing aspects of it, but I do think I have a good handle on it. What I don't understand and what irks the hell out of me, are those direct messages from those that you follow on Twitter. Espcially those that send you an auto direct message thanking you for following them, but they must validate you first. I will get there in a minute.

direct messages on Twitter

Here are the last 5 direct messages that I received today after following someone. Now, don't get me wrong. I consider myself to be a very polite person, and that I always thank people. But I believe in the personal method of thanking or reciprocating. In my opinion, these kinds of auto direct messages are like spam to me.  Hey, I followed you for a reason. If I want to read something of yours, or connect with you on facebook, I am not dumb. And don't try to sell me something or poof, off you go into the cesspool of deleted direct messages.

I rock? you don't even know me.. LOL

Another example : I ROCK?? You don't even know me !!! lol

Not to long ago, I placed a question on facebook and Twitter that asked, "Question to all on Twitter: Why do so many send direct messages to those that follow them & they seem like spam. How do u feel? Am I crazy?"

Most that replied agreed that they dislike these auto direct messages thanking their followers and then asking them to follow them on facebook. So I decided to interview a few of the social networking experts out there that do this for a living.

I wanted to share some of Maya's opinions. Everyone will have different opinions, but you can learn from each other. I follow most unless they have many followers and no Tweets or those that bring nothing to the table. Ex. Those profiles of girls giving out their info and say they want to date...  lol

Conclusion : My specialty is helping those with their mortgages, but I always like to add my point of view regarding such topics as marketing, Twitter, Facebook, etc, etc.  Especially for the fact that it is a good part of my business and my business plan, and should be part of your business plan.

The other day, I wrote about comments on your blog posts and how you handle them. I think this is a must read and many of the comments agree. Do you debate, ignore, or delete those comments that you disagree with??  Now, of course some might disagree, but no, I didn't delete those.  ;o)  Nobody really spoke up.

Another topic... Do you know about Klout? Do you throw your Klout around?

I know many don't get Twitter and I don't spend my life on it, but it is another form or marketing yourself. Here is what Mike Bowler Sr. had to say :

Mike Bowler Sr

Ah, take the time. How I interpret this?  Don't use it as a spamming tool or mechanism. Get personal, allow others to get to know you and then want to use you or recommend you.

My Summary : I get many Direct Messages that sound like that person knows me and such. 99% of the time, they don't. It's just another form of mass marketing aka spamming. Understand those that I interviewed above and keep all of this in mind.

Overall, with the new year fast approaching, everyone should be evaluating their business plan and adapting to new changes and new updates. And I like to offer up diffeent opinions from others. How else do we learn, right?  How do you feel about all of this? Do you use any of this in your business marketing plan?

Jeff~ Thank, thank you for this post. I am in the middle of year plan, updating website, updating profile on AR blah, blah, blah... you get the jist.  I am still trying to figure out the right way to use twitter as part of a marketing strategy.  I too,  get the auto response DM with nothing more than a website link. It pi@# me off too. Your words and those of your experts will really help.  Thanks again  Have a Merry Christmas!!!

KIM... . I am sure that there are several ways to use Twitter and I am still learning... but just tweeting your posts shouldn't be all that one does.. or just talking about themselves... but to have mini conversations.. and you can manage this with TweetDeck or HootSuite... thanks and Merry Christmas to you to...

MARILYN... . thanks.. I think I did.. I reached out to 2 others and never heard back. Besides, this was enough to make my point and for validation on my thoughts.. thanks

LI... . well, thank you very much and for the polite compliments.

KEN... . I don't follow you ... I don't follow you... I don't follow you. Seriously, I have done this a few times, but maybe once in the morning, once at night, and then once the next day, that's only if I think it was an excellent topic and or post. I am sure you are talking about those Tweets that go out in succession within 30 minutes or less?  But bingo, no engagement.   Thanks for your insight and for the comment.

GINNY.... . good or bad, get on board and use a little of it to your advantage. Sure, it's not for everyone, but I believe that it can help some, if don't correctly.. even in small moderation. thanks

Hey Jeff, After reading all the comments from your post we are thinking about deactivating our Twitter account that we just started ~ We Respect what Jeremy Blanton had to say in his post 7 ways to be hated on Twitter ~ It would be best not to implement Twitter until you know how to use it effectively ~

Gosh, we don't want anyone to hate us ~

I hate the auto DM's. i got so annoyed that now I don't open ANY of them. I don't have time and they aren't genuine.

Good to know AR camp might be coming to NYC.  Was planning to go to Rebar unless rain camp is same day.

CHRIS... . for my circle of friends, I prefer Facebook. I think if you asked most, it would be facebook over Twitter. You can use sites such as TweetDeck or HootSuite to help you navigate twitter. Helps you have conversations and helps you keep track of who is speaking to you.  Me? I think twitter is more for business, but making those personal connections..

FRANK & KAREN... .  well, jump into twitter now... and just tweet here and there... enjoy, and don't get wrapped up in it all. Just don't go spamming, be natural about it. Read what I had mentioned to Chris and check out those to programs that I mentioned.. TweetDeck & HootSuite.

DEBBIE... . I think that is the consensus here... unless there are some that like them, but were just afraid to say so.. ;o)   In regards to NYC in January, let me know, it would be good to meet more from AR. I have written about my past visits to NYC and I will send you a few. thanks

Spam is spam, regardless of the medium,  and it's as annoying as those phone calls that come in every day with no caller i.d.  and never a voice mail message. ;-)

One of my goals for 2011 is to actually understand Twitter and use it more often.  I know, I know..it just wasn't a priority, but I need to stop procrastinating!
