I don't consider myself the guru of social media networking or know all about the different marketing aspects of it, but I do think I have a good handle on it. What I don't understand and what irks the hell out of me, are those direct messages from those that you follow on Twitter. Espcially those that send you an auto direct message thanking you for following them, but they must validate you first. I will get there in a minute.
Here are the last 5 direct messages that I received today after following someone. Now, don't get me wrong. I consider myself to be a very polite person, and that I always thank people. But I believe in the personal method of thanking or reciprocating. In my opinion, these kinds of auto direct messages are like spam to me. Hey, I followed you for a reason. If I want to read something of yours, or connect with you on facebook, I am not dumb. And don't try to sell me something or poof, off you go into the cesspool of deleted direct messages.
Another example : I ROCK?? You don't even know me !!! lol
Not to long ago, I placed a question on facebook and Twitter that asked, "Question to all on Twitter: Why do so many send direct messages to those that follow them & they seem like spam. How do u feel? Am I crazy?"
Most that replied agreed that they dislike these auto direct messages thanking their followers and then asking them to follow them on facebook. So I decided to interview a few of the social networking experts out there that do this for a living.
I wanted to share some of Maya's opinions. Everyone will have different opinions, but you can learn from each other. I follow most unless they have many followers and no Tweets or those that bring nothing to the table. Ex. Those profiles of girls giving out their info and say they want to date... lol

Jeremy wrote this post, 7 ways to be hated on Twitter. Some good insight and thought provoking information.
Conclusion : My specialty is helping those with their mortgages, but I always like to add my point of view regarding such topics as marketing, Twitter, Facebook, etc, etc. Especially for the fact that it is a good part of my business and my business plan, and should be part of your business plan.
The other day, I wrote about comments on your blog posts and how you handle them. I think this is a must read and many of the comments agree. Do you debate, ignore, or delete those comments that you disagree with?? Now, of course some might disagree, but no, I didn't delete those. ;o) Nobody really spoke up.
Another topic... Do you know about Klout? Do you throw your Klout around?
I know many don't get Twitter and I don't spend my life on it, but it is another form or marketing yourself. Here is what Mike Bowler Sr. had to say :
Ah, take the time. How I interpret this? Don't use it as a spamming tool or mechanism. Get personal, allow others to get to know you and then want to use you or recommend you.
My Summary : I get many Direct Messages that sound like that person knows me and such. 99% of the time, they don't. It's just another form of mass marketing aka spamming. Understand those that I interviewed above and keep all of this in mind.
Overall, with the new year fast approaching, everyone should be evaluating their business plan and adapting to new changes and new updates. And I like to offer up diffeent opinions from others. How else do we learn, right? How do you feel about all of this? Do you use any of this in your business marketing plan?
Update thanks to Mike Mueller - A new tool that helps kill Auto Direct Messages aka DM's and helps with other things.
SocialToo - check it out...
