Relocating to Oahu, Hawaii? A Glimpse into Old Town Wahiawa

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

Wahiawa Botanical GardenWahiawa (Wha hee a wha) town on Oahu is an old neighborhood in Central Oahu and about 5 minutes from Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Air Field.

Wahiawa Botanical Garden is located half way up Wahiawa Heights on California Avenue. It is a 27 acre Tropical Rain Forest and the deepest part of the ravine is 47 feet. Much effort has been made over the years to get the collection of native Hawaiian plants they have today.

A little history:In the 1920's the Hawaii Sugar Planter's Association leased this site for experimental tree planting and this property was transferred to the City and County of Honolulu in 1950.  In 1957 they established the Wahiawa Botanical Garden.

Guided tours can be arrange by calling 621-5463.

 Wilson Lake

Wilson Lake - Wahiawa State Freshwater Park:Is the largest freshwater sport fishery in the State of Hawaii. The Reservoir was constructed in 1905-1906 and has a capacity of over 3 billion gallons and a shoreline about 20 miles in length.

In the early 1900's Largemouth Bass was stocked in the Lake Wilson. Channel catfish in the 1940's and in the 1960's Peacock Bass was introduced.

The Lake Wilson fishery started dying a slow death due to the discharge of 2 million gallons of treated wastewater dumped into the reservoir daily. This nutrient rich waste is a breeding ground for for vegetation blooms which kills the fish.

In 2004-2005 the State of Hawaii spent hundreds of thousand of dollars to clean up Lake Wilson which had the weed Salvinia Molesta that was covering the 300 acre lake and was almost a foot thick. It took three giant excavators working daily to remove it.

Leilehua High School

Leilehua High School- Was the high school (Mililani High School wasn't finished "back then") I attended from 9th grade and I graduated in 1974 (one year early as a Junior) Leilehua High School was actually established in 1924 and located on Schofield Barracks military base. The Schofield and Leilehua Schools were combined and relocated to its 32 acre site in Wahiawa Heights in 1949.

The school mascot is the "MULE" and I remember going to all the football games and shouting, "Go Mules!".

Click on the link above for more information on Leilehua High School.

Neighborhood "Need to Know" locations:

Wahiawa General Hospital- In 1944 the Wahiawa Hospital Association was founded and they established the Wahiawa General Hospital. In 1957 the hospitals original wing was underway.

Wahiawa Community and Business Association:  Representative of the Wahiawa residents and businesses.

Wahiawa Restaurants-  A little summary of Cafe Olive, Molly's Smokehouse, Dole Pineapple Restaurant, Shige's Saimin Stand.

If you are relocating to Oahu, Hawaii (maybe possibly due to a transfer with the Armed Forces to Schofield Barracks or Wheeler Army Air Field) then Wahiawa may be just the place for you!

Sally, it looks like a such a pretty place, I think I too could get lost in the Gardens (I can get lost in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, I can't even imagine those!).  And how nice that they would clean up that pretty lake.

Sally,  that looks like a great place to go relax sometime.  Too bad about the water getting  contaminated in Lake Wilson.  It's nice to see the home town feel of Mililani.

Sally... I agree with many, that you do a great job with these. In regards to the first two pictures, it doesn't even look like Hawaii or anything surrounding Hawaii. Again, this is a good post.
