I've started to cringe when I hear "Jesus is the reason for the season". As a Christian, I don't figure Jesus IS the reason for all the crass commercialism, overspending, overeating and drinking, and all the other over-indulgences that too often make up the holiday season. In my town, the Christmas things started appearing in the stores this year BEFORE HALLOWEEN! That's ridiculous!
So what IS the reason for all that? Well, people like to party. And the dark, bleak winter days need cheer. And people LIKE to overindulge. And our economy is based on spend, spend, spend. And some if it is just fun. But it isn't what Christmas is about.
So I say we should declare a new holiday, and push all of the commercialism and overdoing onto that holiday. That way we can celebrate Christmas, or whatever religious/spiritual holiday you celebrate, as JUST THAT. Religious/spiritual. O Holy Night.
What shall we call the new Holiday? I suggest Overindulgence Daze, or OD for short. Can you see it? "Are you ready for OD? Nah, I haven't spent enough yet." Or, "I've got two more parties to overeat at for OD," Or "Boy, I really ODd this year!"
What do you think? Are you in?
