Calling All Real Estate Agents: Turn Off Your Cell Phones and Step Away from Your Computer

A new study from Xobni found that more than half of adult workers check their email while on holiday. Even worse is that 55 percent check it every day and 28 percent check it multiple times each day.

As someone who works with real estate agents on a regular basis, I am very aware of your die-hard work ethics. Since you are your own boss, your car is your office, your personal cell phone is how clients reach you, and your job is to be there for your buyers or sellers 24/7, I can see how it is a little difficult to actually relax and take a break.

But for the sake of your sanity, you are going to have to force yourself to actually stop working during the holidays.  Make a genuine effort to disconnect your cell phone, laptop, iPad, and any of you other gadgets - at least during the time you are spending with your family.

When I recently took a trip to London, I made a conscious decision that I would not connect while I was there. I had no use of my cell phone, I did not check my e-mail, and I never once logged into Facebook. I'm not going to lie, it was very difficult at first. But once I got over the initial shock of feeling like I had lost my left arm (I'm left handed so that's pretty bad), it was actually very freeing. I was able to completely enjoy myself and live in the moment.

The funny thing is, even though I was "dis-connected," I actually felt more connected than I had been in a long time. When I had a conversation with someone, went out for a day trip, or sat down for a meal - I was completely there. I listened to everything the other person said and just lived in the moment. I noticed the little details more, I was more polite to people, my shoulders slowly fell further from my ears, and the days lasted much longer.

As your real estate virtual assistants, we are giving you persmission to take a real break. In fact, if you are reading this blog, I hope you'll make it your last one and decide that it's time to shut down, leave the office and enjoy every minute, every exchange, and every conversation this holiday season brings!

From RealSupport's family to yours, have a very Happy Holiday!
