The Morning After a Desert Storm

We get spoiled here in The Coachella Valley with so many subsequent days of sunshine and many of us frown on the thought of rain. I grew up in Northern Louisiana and I have to admit, nowadays I miss the rain. I miss sitting on the front porch watching the drops come down while an electrical show paints the sky. Massive storms rarely happen here in the desert.

Today however, is the first day of sunshine after a storm system has kept us dark, dreary and wet for three days. We've had periods of outright downpours with streets being closed and traffic at a standstill. Most everyone has opted to stay indoors and ride it out.

But, if I had to pick a time when the desert is the most beautiful, the most perfect, and the most amazing I'd have to say it's the day after a rainstorm. No one seems to realize how dusty and dirty the desert gets. Oh sure, we see the dirt on our cars, we see it in the windowsills and we notice a haze that sometimes flutters across the sky. What we, or should I say I, sometimes don't realize is that same dusty layer can also blanket our landscape.

So after a rain, everything is crisper, everything is more colorful, everything is fresher. As Mother Nature sends us a storm to dust off our desert floor it makes me appreciate living here even more. With that in mind and waking up to some awesome mountain-scapes, I thought I'd take the long way into the office today. Drive a little slower, take a longer route, make a couple of detours and stop to photograph a few scenes. That's how life is best enjoyed here and today, after a thorough cleansing, is one of the best days to be here.

Randy, Great post. We never give rain a second thought here in the Ozarks where we get 45 inches of rain a year on average.

You are certainly living in a beautiful part of the world. The snow capped peaks are incredible. The pictures make me think it's a great place to hike.

Kind Regards, Chas. E.
