Your Computer Just Crashed or Rebooted, Do You Know What Happened?

I build a new computer for my older brother about 3 weeks ago. The computer was with me two weeks prior and runs fine. For the last week, he has been complaining that his computer reboots about twice a day. The problems seem random because it does not happen at any specific time.

Computer crash, blue screen of death

There are a few ways to trace the problem, one would be to write down any error message on the screen and try to google it. Try to remember what was the latest hardware or software that was installed previously when the problem started. Go to Event Viewer and see if there are any errors or warnings around the crashed time. Use a program to read the "dump" files to see what the errors are pointing to.

In my situation, the dump files was pointing to the USB ports, which came from a new USB device that my brother got. The dump files also point to the Google Chrome browser, so I had my brother to stop using that browser and tried Fire Fox to see if that would fix the problem. Hopefully that will. Probably will check for viruses and spyware just in case.

Is there anything else that can help pinpoint the source of crashes or reboots?

Song,

I have another solution to computer problem. Actually, I have two solutions.

One: I call my local Bay East Association of Realtors. One of our Realtor benefits offered by our AOR is FREE help with computer problems. Help can be obtained over the phone or we can take out computers to the AOR and the tech people will attempt to make the fix. Really a great benefit. I have used it several times...both phone help and hands on help...and the expert assistance and cost savings are truly great benefits.

Two: I get help from my son-in-law. He set up my home wireless system and has helped me in other times of need.

We all need to have resources if we are not the experts.

One of my goals this year is to learn how to build my own computer.  I'll be watching your posts to see what I can learn.  Hope you find your brother's problem.
