What I Learned...From a Little Kid
I have the opportunity to share a communion message at church tomorrow. When I remember the death, burial & resurrection, I think about the ways Jesus uses others to teach me about the meaning of the cross.
This is the time of the year that two things happen...we reflect on the past year & look forward to the new year.
Over the past 12 months I have been inpsired by our daughter, Ashlyn. God used Ashlyn to teach me 4 main things;
-
"Love For Family"... after Nanny (my grandmother) fell & broke her hip, Ashlyn was amazing how she cared for Nanny
-
"Faith that God Answers Prayers" ... Ashlyn continued to pray for a baby sister even after we told her Mommy & Daddy are not going to have any more children...God answered her prayer, Ashlyn will be a big sister next month
-
"Serving the Poor" ... Ashlyn inspired our family to bake cookies & bring them to the homeless... it felt great in our hearts to bring those cookies to the STAR Family Shelter on Christmas Eve
-
"Priorities" ... even though Ashlyn was excited about Santa coming & bringing gifts...she prayed that the most important thing about Christmas is that it's Baby Jesus' birthday
It's humbling to have your 6 year old daughter be the catalyst that strengthens your relationship with Jesus.
I'm the man...the husband the father....I'm supposed to lead my family...but I need to be humble in allowing those who Jesus puts in my life, whether a 6 year old or a 30 or 40 year old...to help refine my character to help me be more Jesus-like.
As 2011 is fast approaching, many of us will be making New Year's resolutions...
Resolution: "determination to make a firm commitment to do something, usually a sacrifice"
It's easy to make a New Year's resolution, because it's easy to begin anything...true character is when we follow thru to the end
Helen Kellar once said, "Character cannot be developed in ease & quiet. Only through the experience of trial & suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, & success achieved."
To show our gratitude for Jesus' sacrifice ... let's have the resolve to give our lives to HIM everyday
