Recycling the Christmas Aftermath

Christmas provides a wide variety of ways to recycle the products that are used only during the holiday season, as well as those that the holiday replaced. Recently Greg Nino in Texas did an informative blog about staying safe and not drawing attention to the new goodies that are now in your home. That was wonderful post.

I thought I would take a look at some of the things we could to lessen the impact of the environment in the aftermath of the Christmas holiday.

If you do not have a live or artificial tree chances are you will need to find something to do with your old Christmas tree. Most communities have a tree pick up program, check with your local municipality for any such services. Some of the more rural communities allow burning of the old tree, not sure how environmentally friendly that is, but it is still better than the landfill. I actually use the trees on the property, I have a small stream that runs along the side of my property and I use the trees to build up the ground level on the house side of the stream.

Old greeting cards are big recylcle opportunity for my wife. For many years she has sent the used cards to St Judes Ranch for Children in Boulder City, Nev. They reuse the cards for fund raising projects, and it is a wonderful way to make use of the old cards. Visit the St. Judes Ranch website for more information.

Don't forget about those new electronics that will be replacing old ones.  There are alot of options here for recycling. There are websites that actually will pay for old electronics, but I choose to donate locally. I like our local Survivors for these type of things, Survivors assists women who are victims of abuse. They are always looking for cell phones, laptops, desktops etc. This is a better option in my opinion, I like to keep things local, and look for charities that will benefits the local community.

Time to update those old exterior lights, many stores offer incentives to upgrade from the old incandescent bulbs to the new energy efficient LED lights. For more information and idea's on how to recycle those old incandescent lights, there is more information available on recycle holiday lights.

A word of caution about wrapping paper. The usual paper style wrapping paper is a recyclable product, however many of the new wrapping papers are made with non-recyclable products. Many are made with plastics, foil or mylar type materials. The best bet here is to purchase recyclable wrapping papers from the get go.
