Big New Homeowner Mistake: Using the Fireplace Without Opening the Flue

This is the perfect time to start a fire in the fireplace. For many new homeowners this is an exciting thought; to live out the fantasy of roasting marshmallows in their fireplace for the very first time or having everyone gather around the fireplace. But BE CAREFUL and don't forget the crucial first step! I know throughout New Jersey we probably have at least 10 - 15 inches of snow and the wind is still howling. The roads are treacherous, the public transportation is at a standstill and all reports say to stay in your home, so why not start a fire, but...

I've had many a homeowner -- not always a new homeowner either -- call me saying how they started a fire and before they knew it smoked filled their room. They thought the house was on fire or the home inspector didn't catch something during inspection or the logs were tainted, and on and on and on. When all is said and done, 95% of the time, the homeowner forgot to open the flue before starting the fire. Having the flue closed means there's know where for all the smoke to go. It rises and then falls back into the room when it realizes it can't go out. Do yourself a favor, find the flue and open it before you start the fire. Then do whatever you enjoy; put on your favorite music, wrap yourself in a blanket with a good book, play with the kids and enjoy.
