"De-personalizing" is not the same as removing the personality

victorian houseEvery home has it's own personality and character.  That is what makes people fall in love with them.  Yes, people can alter a homes personality by adding different colors and themes to the rooms, but a big, old victorian is still pretty much going to feel like a big, old victorian.

Homeowners who are selling are trying to incoporate staging.  They go online, type in "home staging", hit search and article after article talks about de-personalizing, de-cluttering, and how to make your home anonymous.

The problem is they take this information at face value and go too far.  Most homeowners do notthermo realize how COLD a home feels that has no personality at all!

I recently worked with a client who "staged" her own home.  When I saw the home, I was overwhelmed by the amount of WHITE in this house.  She was so proud of herself for having re-painted all the walls stark white, taken down all the art, put away all the knick-knacks.  She told me she had de-personalized the house and now buyers would be able to see the potential.   I had a hard time explaining how the house felt without using the word "asylum" in a sentence.

There is a difference in homes that have been staged for homeowners to get that warm and fuzzy feeling, and just simply stripping the house down to bare walls.    Homeowners need to be educated that like any thing else in life, de-personalizing needs to be done in moderation!

I am getting ready to sell my home.  My realtor said to put away all my personal pictures and my husbands sports collection.  Are you saying I should not do this?

 Thanks for your help!

You should take down all of your personal pictures and your collections and replace them with neutral art. Understanding some of these principals is the main reason to have a professional stager complete a consultation so that you can have a room by room plan. This makes the process so much faster and easier! Good luck!

True, sometimes people can get too far in staging principles. It's all about neutralizing the home but not sterilizing the home ;)

I couldn't agree more Amanda.  The house still needs to have a feeling of "warmth" - to be able to feel like a home to the potential buyers.

You basically tone down the owners personality and dial up the personality of the house. Certain homes are naturally warm and embracing while others have a cool, serene feel. If you do it right the house will automatically attract the perfect buyer. You have to stay true to the intrinsic character of the house.

I couldnt agree more!  I love the line: Neutralizing, not sterilizing.

The home needs to retain a personality but it just can not shine with the owner's personality - their personal photos, collections, religious items, and yes, sometimes their decorating taste.

Good point Amanda! Glad you brought this up...white is back but it comes in all shades from bright to bone and they should all be used. The average person does not know how to achieve this look.
