Moving with pets requires special consideration and precautions. Pets don’t complain, but they can be easily traumatized by the move. The unusual activities of a move, especially moving day, may encourage a pet to run away. Each pet should have special identification tags with your name, address, phone numbers, and even an alternative contact if you are unavailable.
If the animal is traveling with you, it may become disoriented and lost. Keep close watch over your pets, and have current information on the identification tags. Better yet, take them to a friend's home during moving day.
When traveling by air with your pet, make the arrangements ahead of time; know that some airlines have a number of restrictions about transporting animals. Please don’t simply show up at the luggage counter with your bags and your Giant Schnauzer in a kennel. You’ll save yourself countless problems by checking ahead and making advance arrangements.

Nearly every state has laws on the entry of animals. Write to the State Veterinarian, State Department of Animal Husbandry, or other state agency for information. Most states require current rabies vaccines for dogs and cats. Hawaii, for example, quarantines pets coming on to the islands. Your new destination may have restrictions on the numbers or types of pets that can live at a single residence. If you have many animals, or certain controversial breeds, check with the city or village council before you move.
After the move, make your pets "feel at home" in your new surroundings. Show them where their food is, their beds and especially their toys. Spend time helping them become acquainted with their new home. Then sit back and relax. You've earned it!
