Dollar General May Be Putting More Food on 650 More Tables

Last week Dollar General announced plans to build a distribution center in Bessemer, Alabama (a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama).

Along with the distribution center will come 650 jobs.  That's good news in any economy but especially in an economy such as the one we are currently experiencing.

All told, the average pay will be approximately $12/hr which may not seem like a lot to some people, but to others it's a pretty good way to make an honest living and provide for a family.

The 1 million square foot distribution center will serve as the hub for supplying neighboring states. Dollar General currently has over 100 stores in the region and is a welcomed brand for the cost conscious.

The city is expected to approve an incentive package today and well, we hope the rest will be history in the making.  Not only will there be 650 jobs at the distribution center, but guess what?  Somebody's got to help build the darn place.

2 Thumbs up for Dollar General.

That is so great.... the sad part is that not everyone will be able to get a job. But on the bright side there are a lot of people who will. $12 is not bad to start out with as an average. That pay wage is about the same here with these types of stores.

We are hearing good things about people moving here to Cleveland. Maybe we are slowly crawling out of this hole we are in?

Yeah I know Sussie, but I will be happy for those who land a job both during construction and as employees in the distribution center.

Barb I hope so and I wish it would overflow to my neighboring state of Michigan (Detroit).

It is always exciting to learn of a new company moving in especially when it brings that many jobs to the area. Congratulations.

Charita,

Agreed. 12 bucks an hour, for a new job, would make a lot of people happy. How well would that go over in your hometown of Detroit? Or my home state of Ohio? I can see a line around the corner in both of those places.

Darned good news Donna.  I would like to be a fly on the wall when Dollar Generals notifies people to tell them "we'd like to offer you a job."  Wow!

I know Debra.  That's powerful isn't it?

So do I Chris.  So do I.

Scott when I think back to how vibrant Detroit used to be when blue collar workers were well paid, lived the high life, and were considered very well off by some.  And now, it saddens me to no end to see Detroit (and Ohio) in such dire straits.  Both Michigan and Ohio could use a jolt of good news like Dollar General has promised in our area.
