Wordless Wednesday- and then there were two by Christmas Day

My four year old was thrilled with his gift on Christmas Eve. A fish tank with four little fish. He named them Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots and Fiona. The chap at the pet store said they would all be very happy together. Christmas morning and only Shrek and Fiona have survived. How do you explain that to a Four year old?

Oh my -- I think I would say that Santa needed a couple of fish at the north pole, but he left you the best ones!

Ellie, wow, that's a tough one. Really, how can you explain this to a 4 year old? How did you? How did he take it?

Jon- To be honest, we have not had to deal with this yet. My poor little tyke was struck down with stomach flu overnight and has not really noticed any of the gifts that he opened yet. I am leaning towards Joans response.

The fellow at the store should have told you that the one I see in the photo is a Siamese fighting fish and their job is to fight to the death.  They are never put in a tank with other fish.

Hi Ellie... Susan beat me to it.  Those are Betas and they should always be alone in a bowl... never with other fish of any time.  What apparently you had was the marine equivalent of a bar brawl death match!  Sorry!

Sheesh... the folks are getting a little restless tonight with their fish stories.  Bar brawl death match.  Uh huh.  I get the point, but I think I'll pass.  Joan's story was great.

Another foursome could have been Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel.

When things like that happen... it can be a real parental puzzle as far as what to tell a four-year old.  Perhaps getting him four little turtles would have worked out better.  Take care...

Ellie, I guess it wouldn't be appropriate to say that Sponge Bob got hungry? If as Susan, #9 points out the fish were a bit aggressive? the store manager owes you some fish.

Ellie:  I can remember many, many times when I/we bought my little Robin when she was very little... some goldfish... and of course, some of them died.  I can remember various emergency runs to the pet shop to "replace" the gold fish... so we would not have to explain what happened.

I can also remember hoping against hope that Robin (now 38) would NOT remember the different markings on the goldfish... the one that got flushed and then replaced... and then ask why the fish looked different from what it looked like yesterday.

Ahh... the joys of parenting... and the attempts at shielding my baby from reality 'cuz I didn't want her to be hurt.

Yikes, that's a tough conversation to have with a 4 year old. He's probably going to be able to see right through any obvious lies, 4 year olds are a lot more perceptive than we give them credit for. I wouldn't know how to broach this subject without causing a little distress.

I think that is a beta fish and I thought they were supposed to be separate from the rest.

Is there time to replace them for your little one?

Happy New Year!
Margaret
