I am thinking of buying a new camera. Based on what I have experienced with my Pentax MX, I made a list of requirements. The lens I have now is a 5.8mm (30MM) and is not wide enough to capture an entire room. I use a .5x adapter, taking it to 15MM, which may be a little wide.
Most of the cameras I am looking at are 24MM or 26MM. Are these wide enough to capture an entire 12 x 12 room? Which is the size of a small dining room, or bedroom. Or will I still need an adapter?
Here is my list of requirements.
24 or 26 MM wide angle
Min 18x optical zoom
Pop up flash.
Would the option of a hot shoe be advised? Will the diffuser soften the photos enough to make a difference in MLS and Internet Photos?
8 MP min. The real catch I have seen is some newer cameras save images as 10MP, 5MP, 3MP, 2MP, and no longer offer 1MP or 640 x 480. The MLS will not allow pictures larger than 100k in size. This requires 1MP format or smaller. Saving to the camera on a larger format will require a reduction using a photo editor before sending to MLS.
Panorama mode. I just discovered this on the camera I have now. I also found a program that stitches the pictures in much better quality than the software that came with the camera. http://www.photopos.com/Pos-Panorama-Pro-Panoramic-Image-Software.asp
I also like to take close up shots in macro, flowers, nature, etc. Let me know the results you have experienced.
Any other features, suggestions you may have on a camera will be appreciated.
Dennis,
I have 24mm and it is just adequate. I wouldn't want to go low enough to put a lot of barrel distortion into the shots, though. That may be at 18mm or lower.
And I think you should be able to find a camera that allows you to set the resolution lower. My 8MP camera lets me take it down to 5MP, 3MP, or 1MP.
Here's where I go to read up on camera specs and in-depth product reviews: DPReview.com
Good luck!
I actually take most of my iterior pictures at about 15mm and there is a distortion, and the corners show a black shadow from the lense. I fix it in a photo editor by cropping the picture. This also alllows me to save the cropped copy and a new file. The jpeg reduced the file size a bit so I can upload it to Internet sites. Maybe a lens adapter taking it to 18-20mm will do the trick and save me the process of editing. Remaning would be mush quicker.
One important question about cameras I just thought of. How do you find out which cameras have the quickest response? I notice a delay with the 2 digital cameras I have. When I try to take an action shot, the subject if out of the picture when the camera reacts.
