#1 Tip to Assure Good Luck in the New Year by Barbara Hensley & The Barbara Hensley Collection @ RE/MAX Hometown in Rockwall, Texas
It was funny reading this blog, because my entire life I was told to have good luck in the upcoming year, I needed to eat black eye peas and cabbage. My thoughts are I can listen to the black eyed peas! LOL
#1 Tip to Assure Good Luck in the NewYear by Barbara Hensley & The Barbara Hensley Collection @ RE/MAX Hometown in Rockwall, Texas
This started back in antique days, then came on strong after the Civil War, but all I really know is that my Dear Mother, Lilly Frances Williams, never started a New Year without serving black eyed peas.
My Mother Told Me..."You MUST always eat Black Eyed Peas on News Year's so that you will have good luck all year long."
My Mother served up healthy portions of slow cooked black eyed peas, accompanied by generous pieces of hot corn bread, turnip greens, and onions. Oh yes, always served with lots of ice cold tea even in freezing weather! Ymmmm....I can almost taste it now!
I briefly lived in the Chicago area many years ago and could not find dried black eyed peas in the grocery store so my Mother mailed me a package so that we would have them on New Year's. My Mother never failed to look out for me!
I can't say if it is a true fact that eating black eyed peas on New Year's works or not....but, I ALWAYS DO IT...AND I AM A PRETTY LUCKY PERSON! (Of course, I sprinkle a fair amount of prayers in there too!)
In more recent years it has become very trendy in the south to serve black eyed peas at private parties, restaurants, and night clubs.
