Fort Myers Beach Polar Bear Club Dips Into Frigid Gulf Waters ! Brrrr !!

By

Fort Myers Beach Polar Bear Club Dips into frigid Gulf waters !!!   The original Polar Bear Club was started in Coney Island and is still alive and doing well.  Each year Polar Bear Clubs from around the nation gather on January 1 to ring in the new year with a celebratory swim in a local lake, river, ocean, etc.

The Fort Myers Beach Polar Bear Club held its' 6th annual swim in the Gulf of Mexico waters in front of the Holiday Inn.  The club meeting starts with a general gatherng at the Pinchers' Crab Shack Tiki.  Members and prospective members meet and greet while fortifying themselves with various adult beverages.  The club band was in attendance and had the place rockin'.

After adequate fortification the club heads to the Gulf of Mexico followed by adoring fans, many dressed for the event.   A hacksaw is used to cut a large opening in the ice followed by a chilly dip in the frigid Gulf waters !   Every year the water temp is exactly 34 degrees and the air temp is exactly 34 degrees. The wind chill is also exactly 34 degrees thus allowing any and all participants to join in on the fun.

Good morning Charles, The temp was in the low 70's and the water temp was actually about mid 60's. And yes, a fun time was had by all !

Bill - Do you join in with this recreation.  There is not enough fortification in the world to persuade me to participate.

Now seriously, you already know that you wouldn't find me in no waters at this time of year, anywhere. I look more like a grizzly bear than a polar bear, anyway...

Hi Pam,  Funny how the water temp rises after a few adult beverages !

Morning William,  I'm betting if you were here you would have been front and center !  Thanks for stopping by.

Hey RR,  I wondered about that too, had a couple of adult bevs, checked the thermomoter, saw the guy using a hacksaw to cut through the ice and sure enough - I couldn't read it !  Well, if we had a Polar Bear Club with water temps in the 60's how foolish would we look  -  don't answer that !

Bill, this may sound fun for you mainlanders...but where I come from (Hawaii) even water in the 60's is for polar bears! Yikes!!! :D

Bill, I sort of imagine that the northern waters are a whole lot colder than the gulf!

Hi Pat,  Nope, we used the official polar bear thermometer and the water tested exactly 34 degrees.  Same temp every year.

Bill, I'm thinking all the fortification prior is what makes the water, air, wind chill and everything else 34 degrees. Looks like a lot of fun.
