Private and public construction totaling $1.5 billion is now underway in downtown Oklahoma City. This is not the first time the downtown area has gone though major cosmetic work.
Devon Energy Center will soon be the tallest building in the state, after its $750 million upgrade is complete. The project included the expansion of the city garage, which was reopened quickly for citizens.
The former Kerr-McGee headquarters, was brought back to life by SandRidge Energy. This project also produced over 500 jobs for the area. Demolition that began in November will improve the tower, as well as develop a multi-purpose use event venue that will overlook the park.
Downtown Oklahoma City saw the changes in both residential and business areas. Plans were made for a new hotel and apartment complex to begin in the spring of 2011. A two-tier conference center may also show itself in the future as Oklahoma City hosts the U.S Conference of Mayors and National Main Streets Conference.
If you head over to Myriad Gardens you can envision many positive changes which will include a restaurant, ice skating rink, children's play area, new waterfalls and sidewalks, and a grand lawn capped with an amphitheater stage.
Finally, Project 180 has begun with its $140 million improvement of city streets, parks, sidewalks and parking areas. The planning stages began in 2009, with construction beginning in 2010. Most of the changes should be finished in the next two years.
