In an effort to raise funds for the Braintree Community Youth Center, residents Tom and Janice Weitbrecht will be holding a fundraiser called "A Cookout in January to Save the Youth Center" from 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday, January 28, at Emerald Hall, 120 Bay State Drive. The event will feature steak and chicken kabobs, a cash bar, music from DJ Ray Productions, and live and silent auctions. The Weitbrechts own an Auction business.
The center, located at 74 Pond Street, has been operating since May 2007, and is open on Friday and Saturday nights. It was started with a $30,000 donation from the Braintree Rotary Club and relies on donations and volunteers to operate. About 300 pre-teens and teens pay a $10 annual membership fee but the center is having trouble keeping afloat. Tickets for the January 28 event cost $25 and are available at braintreeyouthcenter.eventbrite.com.
