AT HOME WITH DIVERSITY AWARENESS

C'MON MAMA, BABY NEEDS A NEW PAIR OF SHOES

In the movies, this famous line is often uttered by the actor as he prepares to throw the dice at the Craps table.

The game is played like this:

A throw of 7 or 11 wins;

a 2, 3, or 12 lose.

#5, as well as other previously unmentioned combinations, dictates you have to keep on trying until you repeat your original number before throwing a 7 or 11, which loses the bet and the dice.

Craps

I was meeting my clients for the first time.  They didn't have access to a car so I offered to pick them up at their house. I paid little attention to their home address, at first. Mom greeted me warmly with a big hug and a kiss on both cheeks; my first clue that she was of a different culture. Americans tend to be a little more reserved with people we don't know, usually falling back on a handshake upon first introduction.

There were several homes to see that afternoon. It turned out that mom spoke no English and I could only converse with her adult son. We had a nice time. They were lovely people and we got through the showings with the use of universal hand motions and a great many humorous attempts at translation.

The 1956 episode of I Love Lucy "Paris at Last" came to mind. Lucy is arrested in France for inadvertently becoming involved with a counterfeiter and she is unable to make herself understood with the existing language barrier. Hilarity ensues as additional people are brought in to the police station, each one proficient in his own language plus one more which he has in common with the person standing next to him. All these people are necessary to help explain Lucy's ordeal to the police captain. She is, finally, extricated from the mess and released.

I brought them to see a house that was well suited for them. It met the majority of their requirements. It was only towards the end of the day that the rest of their "must haves" became clear.

ORIGINAL SEARCH CRITERIA:  4 Beds/2 Baths, renovated kitchen and baths, if possible, $300,000 and under

Mother and son began discussing the address of this particular house. I was able to make out that the numbers on the door needed to be or add up to the #5. They were big believers in Numerology and #5 meant lots of good luck for them. The son asked me whether the post office would consider changing the address. I didn't think this was possible without a really valid reason. For example, a newspaper article revealed that the address was changed on the Amityville Horror house.

To this day, especially on Halloween but also throughout the entire year, there's an unusually large number of tourists that parade before this house; car traffic, horn honking and general disruption goes on until all hours of the night.

A good reason, indeed!

Because of this additional requirement, the home in question could no longer be considered.

REVISED SEARCH CRITERIA:  4 Beds/2 Baths, renovated kitchen and baths, if possible, $300,000 and under

Address must be or add up to #5

I'm into good numbers myself, would rather a property be associated with some "good numbers"

I had a Buyer say "No", because the house faced the wrong direction.   But numbers?  That is interesting.

I was interested in the part about the clients who had an interest in numerology.  I remember having a client who absolutely would not buy a house that added up to a "6."  Funny thing about that, afterwards, I began looking around at "6" houses.  And, those I knew a little history of, seemed to have their issues and hardship.  I've become a little superstitious about it myself!  I live in a "5" house!

Jill, I had to comment because there was a time when I wanted an "11" in our house number.  Our first 3 houses just happened to have it so when we were buying our 4th house, I was sure we were going to be jinxed because the number"11" wasn't in it.  We weren't!

Now this is a very interesting challenge.  I have a couple who has very narrow criteria.  The good news, there are not too many homes that will meet the criteria.

Good morning Jill. Thank you for sharing this story. You are right about how different cultures are and how things are seen differently, but it is obvious you are adjusting to the challenges.

Make it a great weekend!

Jill - but what about 13th floor in Daytona? I believe, not a single highrise condo here has the 13th floor... 12 and then 14, or 12A and 12B...

Good nobody ever asked for a 13th floor, though :)

Jill, in this case real estate is a crap shoot if the number five doesn't come up. I lost a business sale once because the driveway into the parking lot went directly towards the front door of the business. I hope you can find something for them.

Jill,

Diversity is important is every aspect of life.  I hope you were able to find your clients a home that met all their criteria.  Although, when  numerology is added to this mix it makes your work a lot harder.  However, you can do it.    My bet is on you! C'MON, JILL NEEDS A NEW PAIR OF SHOES. LOL . Great post.  Have a good weekend.

Ron, it makes for an interesting story, actually worth repeating.

Lol, Thanks, Sheila but that was tongue in cheek; just tying it in to my opening line. Although, honestly, another pair of stilettos never hurt anyone.

Will - I'm sure you did. It seems like it does come up from time to time.

Jeff - it's all a learning experience and that's what makes real estate so interesting.

Pete - We can all use all the luck we can get.

Fred - It's all a part of the same belief system and if it makes the buyer happy, I'm ready to comply.

Myrl - Oh, wow - good for you! I wonder what's up with #6.

Kathy - I guess it's like a rabbit's foot or a pre-game ritual. It's something that takes on meaning.

Patricia -  a sweet story, valid and entertaining, at the same time.

Joan - I suppose they will be forced to choose one of the only options.

Laura - Different things are important to different people.

Joe - Diversity awareness is such an important part of the current real estate market with more and more foreign investors.

Thanks, Jon. My parents' building doesn't have a 13th floor either. Talk about a deeply ingrained superstition.

Matt - ...interesting sense of humor.

Michael - A crap shoot was what I was thinking when I began this post. Your driveway example sounds like a feng shui belief where money (or clients) would run right out the door.

Stacey - I spent a couple of years working in Diversity Awareness for the government so I actually love learning and am fascinated with cultural nuances.

Thanks, Dinah -  above all, I want a happy client.

Mike - Not knowing what we're going to wake up to each day is what makes our real estate profession so interesting.

Laura - absolutely, and we're all entitled to that freedom.

Hi Jill, There are all kinds of reasons, Buyers like a house or don't like a house. Sometimes they tell us the reason, as in your case.  Other times, all the criteria fits, but they don't want it and we don't know why.  Maybe the numbers just don't add up.
