Test The Real Estate Waters
Curious About The Real Estate Market
Curiosity about the real estate market is healthy, and you don't have to be concerned about whether you're in the market or not. Curiosity leads to information, especially when you can seek information on your terms and from sources you trust. Gather information, weigh its credibility, and trust your gut if you're considering whether or not to get into the real estate market as a buyer and/or seller.
The Best Market Information
The best market information tends to come from informed, thoughtful, sources who care about the quality of information they provide, and your goals and situation, more than they care about their next paycheck. Sadly, this rules out a lot of media and real estate people. Fortunately, it doesn't rule out all. A good way to gauge the credibility of information sources is to weigh the balance of positive and negative information and stop paying attention to those sources that skew primarily in one direction. Another good filter is to ignore one-size-fits-all advice. If there's no distinguishing between different sets of goals and situations, chances are there's no credibility.
Who You Should Call
If you know a real estate professional who you already trust not to simply try to sell you on action because they want a paycheck, call them. If you don't know anyone like that, ask your friends who they trust. Regardless who you call, consider any sales pressure to be a red flag and move on to someone who informs you in a balanced manner and doesn't push.
You Don't Have To Hurry
Sometimes you may risk a great market opportunity if you wait too long, but it's always better to miss out on a great opportunity than it is to jump into a bad opportunity. Trust your gut, and stay out of the market until you're comfortable being in it. Just don't cut yourself off from good information in the mean time. Any good real estate professional will welcome the opportunity to be your patient and thoughtful information source while you test the real estate waters deciding whether or not to jump in.
