What is Twelfth Day?

holyToday is Twelfth Day.  But, what does that mean?  In Western Europe, they believed that the holiest day of the year was December 25th (signifying the birth of Christ).  However, in Eastern Europe, they believed that the holiest day of the year was January 6th (signifying the "epiphany", when the three wise men first appeared).  Christians couldn't agree on which day was the holiest.  In 557 AD, they decided to celebrate all 12 days between December 25th and January 6th as "holy days", which became "holidays".  That's the 12 Days of Christmas, making today, January 6th, Twelfth Day.

That is interesting. Never knew this before, for some reason I always thought the 12 days were the days leading up to Christmas. This makes much more sense. Guess I never really asked about it. Thanks.

Heather,

I think we should move Christmas gift giving to the 6th of January, when the wise men brought gifts to the Christ child....
