~ Got Multiple Domains? Are You Redirecting Them Correctly? -(URL Redirects) ~
I may not know everything about SEO - heck no one does because they are changing things all the time and it's tough to keep up. But those tried and true things that either make or break the site can really have lasting impressions.
I usually deal with folks that already have a website through some hosting company and need to optimize it. The problem is, that company let them buy 5-10 different keyword rich domains in the hopes of gaining more customers. That's all well and good except that all those domains go to exactly the same website - - - ALL THE SAME , YET ALL DIFFERENT DOMAINS!
Did you hear what I said there? It can get confusing.
If you go to www.mywebsite.com and www.thiswebsite.com and they are exactly the same site with the same content BUT in the address bar at the top still say the two different domains then you have not redirected them properly and Google is seeing them as two duplicate sites.
How to Solve this:
Where ever you have purchased your domains from, go there, i.e. godaddy.com or similar and make sure you have done a 301 redirect on the ones that you want directed to the main domain name. Pick the dominant domain name www.mywebsite.com and then redirect www.thiswebsite.com and www.thatwebsite.com all to the main one. Then no matter what you type in the address bar all domains lead back to the mywebsite.com
Google is a stickler for that duplicate content. If it reads two different sites with the exact same content and every page name has a different domain (URL) then it will naturally see it as two different but duplicate sites.
So, if you have multiple domains... go, check this right now. Make sure you have set this up correctly. If you don't know who your domains are through go to Whois.net and check. Don't let a website provider hold your domain hostage. It's yours and you can direct it wherever you want.
