Happy Twelfth Night, ya'll! Today is the official start to Mardi Gras season in New Orleans. And though Mardi Gras day isn't until March 8, there's still much ado in the city and surrounding areas as the Carvival Krewes that parade through town begin holding their annual balls and parties. The float builders have been at work since the end of last season, and the region is preparing itself for the return of the biggest party in the world.
The big events and parades for visitors happen in the two weeks leading up to Mardi Gras day. This part is mostly for the locals and members of the Krewes. I'll be posting the parade schedule shortly, so if you're coming to town, stay tuned!
At 61 days, this is the longest Mardi Gras season until 2038 or something like that. Let the king cake eating begin! The following pictures are from when some friends and I prepared to parade with the Krewe of King Arthur in 2009. It's a long time from lineup until the actual parade starts, and lots of alcohol about. You can guess the rest!
HAPPY MARDI GRAS, YA'LL!
