Besides being a real estate agent, I'm also an active artist. I didn't realize what a vibrant art scene there is here. I grew up in Madison NJ, only a few miles from here, and always swore I would never raise my kids in the suburbs. I guess that's why they say "Never say never." About 6 months after my daughter was born, my husband got a job in Livingston. My best friend from high school had relatives who grew up in Maplewood, and I'd visited the town a couple of times and remembered it as being rather nice.
So one beautiful fall Sunday we drove out here. We parked our car on a side street and walked around the corner. There spread out before us was the most charming village I'd seen in a long time. The streets were busy with all different sorts of people, of all ages. We fell in love.
Six months later we rented a house and made the big move. But I was a bit concerned still. I was afraid I would miss the interesting people I'd known in NYC. What I'd done is move to a town where many of the residents had that same concern. At Megan's daycare center I met moms from Hoboken, Manhatan, and Brooklyn Heights who all had the same worry. In short, I found many friends with whom I had much in common.
Now, as a realtor I often have clients who are in the same position I was in then, and I am able to reassure them that they will come to find a community that they can connect with.
