Your Mental Attitude Will Determine Your Success

At risk of being accused of spouting psycho-babble or being a Polyanna, I have to say what I've seen over and over to be true... It doesn't matter what the economy is doing or what others around you are doing. We each control out own outcome. It's the Law of Attraction in action.

You can’t control the market. You can’t control the banks and their decision-making as it affects your buyers and sellers. You can’t even control how the agents on the other side of your transactions will behave.

But you can determine your own success by managing the one factor that you and you alone can control: Your attitude.

This single factor will determine your ability to carry out effective lead-generation marketing, land new listings, assist buyers in finding the right home, and close transactions. You can see it all around you… In this troubled real estate market some agents are thriving while others are struggling. Some are dropping out and some are taking part-time jobs in other industries just to get by. And the difference between those who are succeeding and those who are failing comes down to one factor: attitude.

How can attitude make such a difference? Because it controls the impression you have on the people you meet and the effort you put in to each activity. If your attitude stinks, your results will too!

If you think posting your new listing on Active Rain will bring you leads, you’ll make the effort to create a post that shines. If you think it’s no use but do it anyway, your ad will be dull and lifeless.

The same goes for every other effort you make. If you expect a positive outcome and believe it can and will happen, you’ll give it your best effort.

But if you pick up the phone or meet with a client feeling like you’re not going to get the listing or make the sale, everything about you will scream “defeat.” Your tone of voice and your words will fall flat, and even your posture will show your prospects that you are not the agent for them.

Remember, no one wants to work with a loser.

If, on the other hand, you carry an expectation of success, you’ll present a completely different picture. You’ll convey confidence and optimism. It will show in everything you do and say - and even in how you stand and walk.

And from that positive attitude you'll draw to you the people and events that lead to success.

Your attitude and expectations will also determine whether you continue to learn and grow – or not.

Top producing agents are taking courses, learning how to do short sales, studying about negotiation tactics so they can deal more effectively with the banks, sharpening their ad writing skills, and more.

The truth is, you can’t and won’t succeed unless you believe you will. I believe it was Henry Ford who said it many years ago: “If you think you can or you think you can’t – you’re right.”

So before you talk to another prospect, write another blog post, or create another marketing piece, make sure your positive attitude is in place.

Marte - You are spot on with your assessment. Attitude does drive a lot of people over the finish line. And in this economy, you need all the attitude you can get.

Marte - Attitude is everything in this business right now!  It is amazing just how true this is...without the right attitude you either have to get out of the business or figure out just how to change your attitude.

You said it Marte!  That's exactly right, you get what you put out.  It is the law of attraction.  No body wants to work with a stink, so smile and do your best.  Don't let things get you down.  When your beam with happiness, people will take notice.

Thanks for writing your post, it's always nice to be remind of that.

Best regards,

Grace Yee

Bill - Yes, without a good attitude, we're sunk.

Tim - That is so true. We can control our feelings by choosing to control our thoughts - and by putting our focus on the things that are working and things that make us happy instead of focusing on what is going wrong.

Lori & Bruce - I'm afraid people who are stuck in gloom and doom might not have any better success in a different business. They believe they're being controlled by outside forces.

Grace - Yes, they do notice. And I think we're all drawn to people who are happy.

Barbara - Yes I have read the book and watched the movie. I've also read a few of the Law of Attraction books, the Alladin Factor, and more. I really feel sorry for people who think it's all hocus-pocus. They don't know the happiness they're missing!

Pamela - Yes, the company you keep does affect your own attitude.

Thanks Cosmic Cow Pie!

Corinne - The Secret left out some important points. And of course, it isn't a secret. Great teachers have been telling people for centuries that you get what you think about most. A positive attitude affects everything you do and say - so the more you expect success, the more action you'll take to get it. Fear of success is an odd thing - Why would we fear that? But we do.

Jordon - I love vision boards - they do keep you focused on the reason why you want success.

Marte, so very true. I have people who comment on my optimism on a daily basis, and I credit that as one reason for my increase in production from 2009 to 2010, and my goals for 2011.  It's all in how we deal with what the universe throws in our direction.
