January's Back in Bozeman, MT

People often think of winter in the mountains of Montana as stark, frigid and unforgiving...that couldn't be farther from the truth.  Bozeman enjoys a powerful winter sun, fairly mild temperatures when compared with other locales in the Rocky Mountains and snowfall that makes for some fantastic skiing.  Case in point, we have enjoyed temperatures in the mid-40's over the past few days, without the benefit of direct sunlight.  This "January thaw" is common and since moving to Bozeman I can recall a hand full of January days that have peaked at over 60*...an exception to the rule but a bright mountain day with new snowfall and balmy temps can't be beat.

Today we returned to more common weather, in the 20's, light snow and calm.  Those of us who live here realize that the winter months are good for more than just skiing and hanging out indoors.  Winter activities include snowshoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, ice climbing, and the fishing (which remains quite good in the winter) to name a few.

As a North Dakota native, I always laugh when I hear people comment how harsh the winters are here.  I had to move to Montana before I ever experienced snow falling straight down instead of coming in at a steep angle.

That's borderline t-shirt weather Rebecca!  Just kidding.  I hope you stay warm.  All best for a wonderful 2011.

Jason, Great post! I did not know how different the climate was just a couple hundred miles to our West. Very interesting.

Bob - I grew up just 20 miles east of you in Granville, ND, so I know the differences that you speak of first hand.  The climate is much different here.  By the way, I'm pretty sure my sister was at that bridal show you blogged about.
All best,
Jason Frey
