Christmas Tree Pick Up Dates for the City of Jefferson, WI;

January 10th, 2011

January 17th, 2011

Tree beginning to look a little sad and droopy?

Are there more needles on the floor (or in your foot) than on the tree?  Well, it is that time again.  Time to undecorate the tree.  So, just how do we make this task a little more fun and exciting?  A time that your family actually looks forward to?

Time to start yet another fun filled Christmas tradition!

Here is what you do;

1.  Carefully undecorate the tree putting all decorations away neat and tidy, labeling every box.  Don't worry about all those needles that are popping off left and right!

2.  Carry the tree to a place outside that is at least somewhat shielded from the harsh winter wind.  Keep it in the stand!

3.  Collect pinecones, cotton and jute string, peanut butter, your favorite suet recipe, toilet paper tubes, popcorn, berries, apples, & oranges.

  • pop the popcorn and string it along with berries.  This will become the garland on the tree.
  • cover the toilet paper tubes and pinecones with peanut butter then roll them in birdseed.  Use jute or cotton string (biodegradable) to use as hangers for the tubes and pinecones.  Be sure to make very large loops as to not allow any animals to become entangled in them.
  • mix your favorite suet recipe into balls then cool.  I like to form the ball around the string to help hang it easily.
  • slice the oranges and apples and use the string to hang those as well.
  • use any other birdseed recipes you can find.

4.  Carry all this outside and decorate your "Christmas is for the Birds (and other wildlife)" after Christmas, Christmas tree!

5.  Sit inside sipping cocoa, watching the animals enjoy the tree and reading the following books;

Don't worry if you miss the Christmas Tree Pick-up Dates!

Just bring your tree to the city compost (open Wednesday & Saturday).

The tree's get chipped up and are spread around in city landscaping and our parks!

Thanks Barbara!  I am glad you liked this.  Just don't leave the bird feeders around where Rocky might be able to get them.  :)

A fun thing to do with the kiddos! Thanks!

P.S.  I would think that you get some calls to take down those decorations. Putting them up is a whole lot more fun than taking them down! YIKES! :O)

Laura - This is a wonderful idea, and would make the birds very happy.  I'm afraid it's too late for my Christmas tree, though.  The Firefighters were having a fundraiser - chipping the tree by donation.  I just love a man in a uniform, so I definitely got my money's worth with all those lovely Firefighters helping me out with my tree!  (Big, happy grin...).  Sorry birdies, but this chick has a different agenda!

OOoooowweee Sally, So sorry I missed that!  Well Chickadee, there is always next year!  :)  Glad you liked the idea.  Pour little creatures around this frozen tundra these days sure could use the food.

Hi Laura - Really nice way to spend some cold winter time - getting warmed up with hot chocolate and watching the birds have a feast. Fun - with kids or without.

I couldn't have said it better myself Judy!  I could use that hot chocolate right now, but I am not drinking milk or having sugar these days,... tea time!
