San Francisco Peninsula Living - My iLucky Day!

My iPhone & iMac

Today was my iLucky Day!  I just experienced one of the little miracles of technology and am still basking in the relief of a large annoyance being diverted into a small one.  For anyone who is debating the value of owning an iPhone, I think this one feature could win you over.  It’s Find My iPhone, and it’s available as an app for the iPhone 4 or on Moblie Me for the iPhone 3 or 4 or iPad.

Here’s how it works.  An iPhone user - say me - puts their phone in their pocket, and after 4 errand stops and an hour and a half later arrives at home, realizing that they - I - no longer have the phone in my pocket.  I frantically search my car - nothing.  I then  dump the entire contents of my purse onto the kitchen table - nothing.  I recheck my pant and jacket pockets - nothing.  I call my cell number, hoping to hear a familiar sound - nothing.  I run back out to my car, start to jump in to retrace my steps as darkness begins to descend while experiencing the sinking feeling that I’m going to be really lucky to find it since it could have fallen out anywhere - in a parking lot or a store.  Before I go fully desperato, my husband, who has witnessed my frantic search and followed me out to the car, suggests that I use Find My iPhone.  “Huh?”  He reminds me that our oldest daughter set it up for me at Christmas.   “Okay, what do I do?”  I ask her on her iPhone.
She (relatively patiently) guides me to Me.com where I have to put in my email & password.  Then it shows me on the map where I left it!

Yea for GPS!Find My iPhone map  It also gives me a window to have it make a sound, and I can lock it or even wipe it clean (thank goodness it didn’t come to that!).  Find My iPhone messageI stopped at 2 places on either side of the street it shows, so I call one (no phone there, according to the person who answers) and then the other (bingo- they have my phone and heard the sound it began emitting).

I tell them I’ll be there in about 20 minutes and head out, much calmer, knowing my phone is safe and sound.  I pick up my phone and after thanking its finder profusely, I’m ‘back in action” in less than an hour of realizing I have lost one of my essentials.  Is that cool or what?

Find My iPhone rocks!  And so do my daughter, husband and the very nice person who found my phone and gave it back to me!  I think I just experienced iLuck!

A good lock screen + honesty will help.

Even with "Find my iPhone", it is always a good idea to set an explicit Lock Screen, with a phone number to reach you.

You can do it by creating an image from your PC or directly on your iPhone/iPad with my app called A+ Signature. See: http://www.rti-net.com/Apps.aspx

Wende - great story and happy ending. Besides losing valuable device, the amount of personal information we have on these 'portable computers' is scary to think about losing also. You probably have it set to lock on inactivity too so that at least if ever in anothers hands, info is secure. Thanks to your husband and daughter for their foresight to be able to recover, whew!

Wende, I spend some amount of time every day thinking about getting either an iPhone, an Android, or keeping my Blackberry. My BB ingrates so well with my PC and Outlook calendar, and is so easy to type on, but then there are all the other reasons to get the other systems.  I also am totally dependent on tethering which the BB does, as does an iPhone, but not Androids. It is a never ending discussion. Verizon is getting iPhones shortly which goes in their favor, but they do not integrate as well with PC's, and I like my PC.  It goes on and on like this every day.
