Record numbers of Bald Eagles this year at Higgins Point on Lake Coeur d'Alene

A favorite pass time in Coeur d'Alene this time of year is eagle watching at Higgins Point on Coeur d'Alene Lake.  Bald eagles congregate to feed on kokanee salmon that have come to this area of the lake to spawn.

Wildlife biologists have counted a record number of eagles this year, reporting a record high of 254 eagles on December 23, 2010.  This compares to 104 at the same time last year.  What an incredible sight, literally HUNDREDS of Bald Eagles soaring and swooping down to snatch a salmon from the water!

Higgins Point, on the east end of Coeur d'Alene Lake Drive, is the popular spot to watch, admire and photograph the magnificent birds of prey in action.  This photo was snapped late this afternoon, just before sunset.  Three tired eagles, stuffed with salmon, ready to call it a day....

What a great view Janna.  With the Eagle population more than doubling since last year it looks like you'll be able to enjoy them for many more years.

The numbers for eagles are also up down here in recent years...even sometimes being sighted over our metro area.

But I've never seen three in one tree.

What a thrill to see so many of those magnificent creatures. We have a few who fish in the little lake a mile from us on occasion, but nothing like that. I wonder why the population is increasing?
