The REALTOR®"s Golden Rule #1 of C.O.E. series

By

I plan on starting a series of blogs based on the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS ®, and what better way to start than with the "Golden Rule" that is embedded into our preamble: “Whatsoever ye would that others should do to you, do ye even so to them.”  (or put in shorter version: "Do unto others as if they were you")
I thdo unto othersink we need to sometimes be reminded of who we are and what we stand for as REALTORS ®.  I would like to challenge everyone, myself included, to put aside 10 seconds to think over all of our actions and or decisions before we act upon it.  I know 10 seconds does not sound like a lot of time, but it is enough to determine if our next action is something we would want done to us.
We have all been in those situations where we question if we did the right thing or not, but keep in mind, the main thing is to do our best to treat ALL parties fairly.  I just love working with other agents and/or clients that don't go for the punching matches when it gets to the negotiating table.  No, we are not here to fight, but to reach a Win/Win situation.  Trust me, when parties walk away from the closing table all upset, paycheck or not, that is not a Win/Win situation.  True, some things cannot be avoided, because not everyone will have that philosophy, but we can start the change within ourselves.
    Have a great day!

Unfortunately, the Realtor Code of Ethics has become a panacea to the public and a marketing ploy and revenue enhancement to local boards.  The recent changes are unnecessary and are politically motivated to enhance the perceived image of NAR * not their members.

As a property manager and CPM, I have to now operate under 2 ethics codes * NAR and IREM * abiding by the NEW NAR code amendments may violate my requirement to do what is best for my CLIENTS * the property owners * per the IREM code.

Well, if for nothing else, this sounds like it will be an interesting series, and not just your blogs posts, but the comments as well.  Looking very much forward to it.

Jerry: thanks, and yes, we need to pay more attention to our C.O.E.

Wallace: You are right that some of the "uppers" use it with alterior motives, but that should still not deter us from doing the right thing.

Jean: I am looking forward to feedbacks I get : as long as we all "get along" ;)
