The 7 Minute Post...

DragonDictate for Mac and NaturallySpeaking for PC are two speech-to-text applications that the 7 minute post to ActiveRain by Michael Thorntonhave been around for quite some time. Long been a techie, I tried out the earlier versions of NaturallySpeaking in an attempt to expedite my report writing and take the business to another level. Needless to say, I was rather disenfranchised with the product as it seemed to make more errors than anything else.

I finally ditched the product after numerous hours of training and frustration. On a side note though, if you were looking for a good laugh, it was a pretty cheap investment and it would provide hours of fun.

After reading several reviews on the newer version, I decided to give it a whirl once again. So far, so good. I have been quite impressed at the speed and accuracy of the newer version. In fact, I am typing this entire blog and all of my comments today using DragonDictate for Mac.

On a side note, it is taken me all of 3 minutes to ( type ) this out using the speech recognition application with minimal keyboard input. Perfect? No! But for those who are keyboard challenged; looking for a way to expedite writing their posts; "type” with better accuracy with less spelling errors; or just like fooling around with technology, may find this to be the cat's meow.

So who says that you need to spend hours laboriously pecking at the keyboard to write a blog and formulate your thoughts to paper? I didn't, and neither do you…

I admire you techie types who can figure these things out. I'm still stuck at trying to figure out how to use ScribeFire.

I can write in it - but when I try to copy to Active Rain, all the formatting goes away. Obviously, since other people love it, I'm doing something wrong!

I think I was just "born yesterday"! I've never even heard of this product!  Since I have a pc, Naturally Speaking would be my  choice.  Do you know if this product has been updated?

Hi Michael,

To bad it doesn't work with PCs. I am definitely typing challenged. It would help me out so much. Do you know a version that works with PCS? I would greatly appreciate it.

What is that old saying, " So let it be said, so let it be written" ?  My experience with this type program has not been successful.  Could be my voice tone!

I have been using the new version with my PC for about a month now & find it helpful at times, but sometimes it amkes a lot of mistakes as well.  The problem is that you have to keep watching what it does & make corrections, while my typing, even at 25 wpm might still be faster because I make less mistakes even though it goes a little bit slower.

I believe there is a similar app for smartphones which helps elminate the texting while driving syndrome.  Thanks for the review I'm going to check it out.  On a side note it is nice to see another blogger on AR using a MAC!

I am curious how the program handles revision or inserting additional text, do you have to type this in or canyou use tthe cursor to place text where you want and then speak.

My hubby uses dragon dictate on his iPhone and loves it. I can type so I rarely use it. Thanks for reminding me to tell him that he can get it on his computer as well!

I have been waiting, impatiently, years for a voice recognition software package to save my fingers... perhaps it is time for me to re-investigate.  Thanks for the information Michael.

Sounds like something I could use at some point.  What I always wonder is about background noise.  I like to listen to the radio while I work.

I love it Michael!  Thanks for the tip.  I've tried in the past to use one that came with my phone and it was horrible.  Like you, I did get some good laughs from it though.

It is amazing how fast technology is changing and improving. My client was telling me about a computer he programmed in 1969 that was huge as house, and the programming was binary. He said the computer did not have the capability my smartphone has. Amazing!

There is an app for the iphone (dragondictate) for those of you that like to text! I'm thinking about going to a mac because I've heard so many good things about them.

Thanks for sharing.
