Atlanta Blizzard of 2011 – Why Atlanta could be snowbound for the whole week?

Atlanta does see snow flurries almost every year and it’s not uncommon for us to get one snowfall of an inch or so.  However, invariably, since it is so rare for our temperatures to be lower than 32 degrees and have rain at the same time, we don’t get much snow.

Well, late Sunday evening, Buckhead community in Atlanta GA got 5-6 inches.  That’s a lot.  What’s even more significant is that it’s all still there.  Usually, we get sun and warmer temperatures hours later, such that the snow doesn’t last hours let alone days.  This time, the weather has stayed below 32 with a bit of freezing rain thrown on top.

So, now we have day two off of school today.  More importantly we have more closed Interstate Highways than I have ever scene in Atlanta.  The thick ice and low temps have made it impossible for our EXTREMELY limited DOT equipment to do cleanup.  I heard on this mornings TV broadcasts that we have eight snow plows for 5.6 million people and roads.  Really, our cleanup has typically been a warm up of temps, not so much any plowing.

Atlanta Blizzard of 2011 – Picture at Windsor Parkway by Michelle Francis Buckhead RealtorAs an example I went out with the dog and top snapshots of the street leaving our neighborhood as well as the Windsor Parkway and Peachtree Dunwoody Streets.  (This picture is that intersection!)  As you can imagine, since the Interstates aren’t clean, the secondary roads haven’t been touched.  Traveling a street like Peachtree Dunwoody that is hilly, shady - so the snow won't melt as well as curves is just not smart.  The news is highly stressing if YOU do not have an emergency, please stay HOME!

Well, we are now seeing a strong potential for more snow tomorrow and low temps below 32 for the rest of the work week.  If so, we might be house bound until Saturday.  That would be a whole new experience for the girl who loves the south because of its better temps.

I’m off to plan a list of to-do while snow bound.  Do YOU have any ideas to share?

Play in the snow, then have hot chocolate to warm up.  Play inside games with the kids.  I remember a power outage during an ice storm.  We played a long game of Monopoly by candlelight.  Your kids will tell their kids about all the fun they had during the winter of 2011.

Snow is headed here tonight so the office meeting for tomorrow has been canceled.  Snow days are a good time to organize your files, clean up your home office area, update your database, make "touching base" phone calls to past clients since a lot of people don't go to work and will be home, write thinking of you notes to past clients.....the list goes on.  Sometimes being snowbound (temporarily)is a good thing and forces you to "chill."

I was SO READY for 1-3 inches * got my early AM chores out of the way and went to my office to work until the snow started * and then it did not start.  I talked to Dominion Resources rep in Richmond * she had no snow.  I e-mailed owner in Charlotte * he had some snow.  I e-mailed owner near Hilton Head, not so much snow * EVERYONE had snow but me so I had to REblog  post about driving in the snow to get my SNOW FIX!!!

Hi Michelle - The weather does seem to have hit the crazy zone this winter! I hope Atlanta gets back to normal temps for you very soon!

I live in Connecticut, where we generally have some snow every winter. However, just in the past couple of weeks, we've had several snowstorms and really cold temps, so that there's more than a foot of snow still on the ground, with bigger piles the snowplows have left dotted here and there. And the forecast for the next 24 hours says we'll get another 12-18 inches!!!

So, time to connect on AR, get some blog writing done, start collecting the paperwork for my meeting with my accountant, a couple of Linked In recommendations to write and send, and an article to draft that will be included in first newsletter to be published by a realtor friend of mine.

I plan on staying OFF the roads for the duration!

Yes, we are ready with games.  We have underground utilities, so we'll be playing by the fireplace with a roaring fire - but with power.

Cindy

Love the idea to call and connect with past clients during this time since so many will be home.  Am doing other organizing as well.

Wallace

That's what I expected with this, a lot of hype and no good snow.  It happens like that more than not.  They were completely right this time:-)

Judy

It's all a matter of perspective.  12-18 inches sounds like a ton!  We are staying off the roads for the duration.  No need to add stress to our lives for no good reason.

All the best, Michelle

I saw Atlanta on the news the other day and all I can say is try to make the best of it Michelle. I know being snow bound isn't good for business, but there's still plenty to do while stuck at home.

We got about 12-14 inches in the last day but today the sun is shining and all reports say that our wonderful road crews havedone an outstanding job clearing the roads. I can go out again!
