Atlanta Blizzard of 2011 – Why Atlanta could be snowbound for the whole week?
Atlanta does see snow flurries almost every year and it’s not uncommon for us to get one snowfall of an inch or so. However, invariably, since it is so rare for our temperatures to be lower than 32 degrees and have rain at the same time, we don’t get much snow.
Well, late Sunday evening, Buckhead community in Atlanta GA got 5-6 inches. That’s a lot. What’s even more significant is that it’s all still there. Usually, we get sun and warmer temperatures hours later, such that the snow doesn’t last hours let alone days. This time, the weather has stayed below 32 with a bit of freezing rain thrown on top.
So, now we have day two off of school today. More importantly we have more closed Interstate Highways than I have ever scene in Atlanta. The thick ice and low temps have made it impossible for our EXTREMELY limited DOT equipment to do cleanup. I heard on this mornings TV broadcasts that we have eight snow plows for 5.6 million people and roads. Really, our cleanup has typically been a warm up of temps, not so much any plowing.
As an example I went out with the dog and top snapshots of the street leaving our neighborhood as well as the Windsor Parkway and Peachtree Dunwoody Streets. (This picture is that intersection!) As you can imagine, since the Interstates aren’t clean, the secondary roads haven’t been touched. Traveling a street like Peachtree Dunwoody that is hilly, shady - so the snow won't melt as well as curves is just not smart. The news is highly stressing if YOU do not have an emergency, please stay HOME!
Well, we are now seeing a strong potential for more snow tomorrow and low temps below 32 for the rest of the work week. If so, we might be house bound until Saturday. That would be a whole new experience for the girl who loves the south because of its better temps.
I’m off to plan a list of to-do while snow bound. Do YOU have any ideas to share?
