Culture in Houston, Texas is alive, well and growing.
Although many people who are not familiar with the city will claim that it is a wasteland of um...cowboys and "roughnecks covered in crude", nothing could be further from the truth.
Houston has an extremely vibrant arts community and is one of the nation's centers for music, popular and classical. If you are a singer, opportunities to participate are almost without limit as the number of groups, choirs and theatrical companies number in the hundreds.
Numerous country specific choirs and small singing groups will keep you entertained whether you are a participant or audience, including The Houston Choral Society, The Bach Society, The Houston Symphony Chorus.
Houston has 5 Opera companies, all of which are excellent. The Houston Grand Opera, Black Ebony Opera, The Heights Opera Company, The Gilbert and Sullivan Society and the University of Houston Opera Company. All of these companies make for a great night at the Opera. You will be delighted at the entertainment and the diversity of the productions. Everything from the classical period to the hyper-modern.
One of the best theatrical musicals that I have ever seen was last year's "Cats" done by a theatrical organization named HITS which consists of teenagers from the area. I have never like "Cats" but this production was simply stunning for the talent, staging and extremely high energy of the actors and actresses. I liked it so much that we went back the next night and it was even better. I later saw the Broadway production and it positively dragged compared to the production I had seen in Houston.
In short, we have a terrific cultural scene in Houston, Texas.
