We have to Educate Our Children...Future Home Buyers!

I was reading a blog today about buyers that can't make a decision on a home and their Realtor was driving them around to dozens and dozens of homes week after week.

Been there, done that, don't do it any longer! My daughter graduated from Virginia Tech with a major in Hospitality and a minor in real estate. She is a licensed agent. She is a young adult working at her first post graduate job...which is not in real estate.

I've told her every scary story there is out here about young, first time home-buyers. This is what she has learned from my storytelling:

1. If I'm old enough to buy a home, I'm old enough to look without taking my parents along.  That is because I have confidence in my Realtor that I have carefully selected to help me with my home purchase.

2. I realize that Realtors don't make any money until AFTER I close on my new home. I'm not looking for my Realtor to take me to 40-50 homes before I make a decision. I'm going online to 'weed' out the homes I don't like first. My time is important to me and I respect the same about my Realtor.

3. I know, for a certainty, that honey gets more than vinegar! If I'm nice, show up to showings with a good attitude, don't show up late, then my realtor will bend over backwards to help me. They might even offer to pay for my home warranty, my re-inspect of my home inspection, etc.

4. At no time will I behave like I know it all. I know a lot, but I don't necessarily know more than my Realtor. Between the two of us communicating our thoughts, we will come cocked and loaded and ready to negotiate our REALISTIC deal!

5. I realize that my agent is on MY side and is looking after my interest first and foremost. If I didn't believe that, I wouldn't be working him/her.

6. Home searching is fun. Buying that home is scary. Living in/decorating my new home is priceless. I can't wait to get started!

OK agents....get the word out to your children too! Before long, the masses will understand what we do everyday and how hard it is...and how rewarding it can be with good, solid first time homes buyers. Nothing is sweeter than watching these buyers having their first kiss upon receiving the keys to their new home!
