For some time now, I have known that I love houses. Various types for various reasons. I have also come to the realization that I will never be able to live in all the countries, cities, states, neighborhoods, etc... where I would like to. And, so I live vicariously through my clients.
As a Realtor, I have the privilege to walk through many houses. As I walk through these houses, I notice the architecture and the style. I notice the location and various other aspects. While looking at all this, what I notice most is how people turn these houses into homes. This is what I love the most! I love seeing how families have converted a house's closet into an office or finished a basement to accommodate a family member who has recently moved in.
Lately, I've been looking at houses who have lost their story of what makes them a home. The families have moved on and the homes have been left as houses; no longer a home. Last week while I was showing a vacant house, I found evidence of what made it a home....original blueprints. (I think this was an intentional move of the smart listing agent.) I shared my discovery with my buyer and together we looked over the plans and quickly saw this house through the eyes of a family 60 years ago...what it looked like as a home.
As I drove back to my office, I kept thinking about those blueprints and how fun it was to look through them. I realized I liked this so much because it helped me see the people who were affected by this house.
I wonder what people will conclude about me when they walk through my empty house one day...
