WHAT IS A HOME STAGING ACCESSORY PACKAGE?

Home staging accessoriesA home stager offers many services, including staging a vacant property, or a furnished property.  If the home is vacant or empty, a home stager can organize rental furniture while your home is on the market.  Along with furniture, a home stager also rents out accessories.  It’s often the accessories that really make a space come alive.

One way to rent out accessories is to take the cost of the accessory, then rent it out at 10 – 20% of the original cost.  For example, if I purchase a vase for $20, I can rent it out at between  $1 - $2.  You can just imagine how tedious it would be to count up every small amount, especially when homes can be staged with quite a few accessories.  That’s why at Exit Stage Right, we charge one lump sum for all the accessories, rather than adding up 50 cents here and a dollar there.  Some stagers cost out accessories separately from bedding, towels and small artwork.  Our company lumps all these items into one category, the accessory package, and charges one amount.  Sometimes we add extra accessories to the home on staging day; however, your quoted amount remains the same.

Are accessories kept up to date?  At Exit Stage Right, we pride ourselves in constantly turning over new accessories so that your home staging looks up to date and current.  Of course, with the recent year end sales, we’ve added many new accessories at a lower cost to us, and therefore a lower cost to you, our client.

Here is an example of a recently purchased item.

These wonderful vases come from one of my favourite stores, 18 Karat.  18 Karat carries unique, organic, one of a kind glassware, plant containers, and furniture.  I find the tall, slim shape of the vases, and the smoky glass to be very appealing.   These vases would look great in a modern condo or a contemporary space.

Accessorizing a home can really turn heads and grab a home buyer's attention; buyers will linger longer and not be focused on rushing to the next open house.

Cathy - Well said.  Someone else alluded to a little black dress, with the jewellery being the accessories - was it Michelle Minch?  Can't remember, but I thought that was so true!  I know, I love those vases too!!!!

Love your new addition to your rental accessories.  We also price accessories as a package - makes our job so much easier, doesn't it?

Kym - That really is what it boils down to - being proud of your work, and letting your work represent who you are and what beautiful spaces you're capable of.  Which accessories you choose play a big part in that.

Roger - That's what I love about you - you are a kind, caring soul!

Michele - Aren't those vases sleek?  Can't wait to use them - they do need the right space, though.  I agree, accessory packages make our job easier, and are less confusing for the client, too.

Perfect timing...heading to do my first consult this Sunday!  I shadowed a stager who charged $2, 5, or 10 per item.  I thought what a great idea, but I think I like the package deal better.

LOVE those vases Sally!  You're right, adding up the rental cost of every little accessory is way too time consuming.  I also provide one price per month for rentals to my clients.  As you also said, in most cases I end up adding more accessories than what I quote to "finish the look".  I never charge extra for those added pieces either.  It's a win-win, I'm happy because the room looks totally pulled together and the client is happy that they got extras at no additional charge.  I'm going to check out your link to 18 Karat, I don't think we have one in the Toronto area, but I'll see.

Barbara - Thanks for stopping by and for the Re-blog!

Kathy - Too true - the accessories can unify a space through shape, colour and/or texture.  There's a lot of thought that goes behind just the right accessory.

Christine - Welcome to Active Rain!  Also, congratulations on your first consultation.  Close your eyes and imagine yourself giving the consultation - what you said, what the client says, how well it went etc.  That way, when you actually go to the first consultation, you won't be nervous!  Yes, an accessory package is way easier, and it looks like that's how the majority of stagers work their pricing.

Charlene - Isn't it funny how we get excited about the little things, like new vases?!!  I'm also from the school of "promise the status quo, but always deliver more".  I think 18 Karat is a "one-off", but if you're ever in Vancouver, we really need to go shopping there!

I list items out with prices on a spreadsheet for making my proposals  (rough estimate), but I would never give those prices to the client.

Beth - Oh interesting.  We all have our methods that work for us.  With a spread sheet and a calculator, you'd have a very accurate estimate.  Thanks for sharing!

I would LOVE to go shopping with you some day Sally! We would have SO much fun :-)  BTW, when do you arrive in Vegas? My Sister-in-law and I arrive on the Friday afternoon before the convention. If you're there over that weekend and want to come for dinner and drinks with us, let me know.

Sally when I first started out I too counter every tiny item-geez what a pain.  I now package by the room and I place the number of accessories needed to complement the space but I start with a basic package.  I like HomeGoods I find unique items there.  Good luck in Vegas, hope to see you there.

Carole - Isn't if funny how Messrs. Trial & Error are our best teachers sometimes!  I love HomeSense, too (our HomeGoods version).  Good luck to you, too (it's all very exciting) and I'll be looking for you in Vegas!

Sally, the great thing about the spreadsheet is that it does the calculating for you!

Carole's comment is making me rethink charging by the room.  That would certainly make things easier.  Hmmm.....

Beth - So glad you came back to clear things up.  Of course, a spreadsheet that does the calculating for you - now you're talking!  That would be so much easier.  Carole's suggestion is a good one.  Anything that makes our lives easier, I'm all for!
