Scituate, MA - First Cliff Residents Responsible for Seawall Repairs?

Okay so I am not the only one guilty of advocating how wonderful it is to live in Scituate, MA with its great proximity to the many beaches the town has to offer.  Homes for Sale in Scituate, MA often note their location relative to a particular beach.  However living too close to the water in the middle of January can highlight the cons of being so close to nature.

Recently, a  group of about 15 First Cliff residents voices their concerns to the board of selectmen that a break in the seawall in their neighborhood could cause a breach in the future, something nobody wishes to see happen.  The First Cliff residents highlighted that the seawall was a danger to the harbor and the town boat yard, and since it was built with federal funds more than a century ago and fixed with town funds in the past, they hoped that a precedent had been set and that the town would once again repair the seawall.

The First Cliff residents fear that the sea wall will not stand up to another strong storm.  They even presented the Board of Selectmen with a newspaper clipping showing that the town fixed the wall after the Blizzard of ’78.  They feel the need to look ahead at seawall problems instead of and be proactive to them. There is a significant piece of town property behind the seawall, and it could be a hazard now.

The position of the Board of Selectmen is that because the seawall is located on private property and near a private beach area, and had previously been a privately owned wall, therefore it cannot not be repaired with town funds.  The board did note that they are aware of the condition of the seawall, but clearly stated that there is no money to repair it at this time.  Plans are in the works to meet with the residents of the area and get a handle on the damage and any potential risks it may pose for those tax paying citizens of the area.

Stay tuned on this one, it could get interesting.
