Have You Heard of Ophiuchus?

The minute I heard the news a couple days ago, I knew it was bound to happen.  My phone was going to start ringing.  My family and close friends know I am into astrology.  And, Minnesota astronomer Parke Kunkle, made a few comments on how precession - the gradual and ongoing change in the orientation of the Earth's axis - has thrown the alignment of the zodiac out of whack.  To understand what precession looks like, you can imagine the earth being a top spinning on a table, with the tip of the top rotating overhead.

Most astronomers and astrologers understand that precession is cyclic - with each cycle taking about 26,000 years to complete.

Kunkle went on to announce a so-called "13th sign" to the zodiac, which had been discarded by the ancient Babylonians, who are believed to have invented astrology about 1600 B.C. or so. A new sign, Ophiuchus, would be squeezed into the existing 12 sign zodiac, and presumably bump the corresponding birthdates about a month.

Many astrologers already have stepped forward to say, this has nothing to do with us.  After all there was that great schism that occurred between astronomy and astrology, when Galileo and Copernicus, because of the magical looking piece (the telescope), determined WE weren't at the center of our solar system - the SUN was.  Therefore astronomy was born of astrology.  Who is right? I think both are.  And here's why!  We all know astronomers are right about the placement of the heavenly bodies and constellations in the heavens.  However, astrologers believe that it is the heavenly body's influence upon us here on earth, that we are trying to determine.  We know moon phases have an effect on ocean tides.  If you have worked in a hospital emergency room, you know shifts worked during full moon are going to be busy.  Astrologers believe there are planetary influences as well.

Western astrology is tied to seasons.  The astrological year begins on March 21st.  If you go to Stonehenge at summer solstice, the sun will make its annual appearance at the designated spot, just as it has for over 5000 years.  Nothing has changed for us on earth as far as the seasons are concerned.

Let me tell you a personal story about how this works out in my family.  I have a son, a grandson, and another family member (all men), who were born in the sign of Sagittarius.  They are all taller than most men (6' or better).  They are all world traveling, philosophical, spiritual, and always checking to see if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, instead of just watering their own grass.  They are a tad off-the-wall at times.  They hate asking for directions.

I also have a number of Capricorns in my clan.
Capricorns love structure, money, and like to collect things - coins, stamps, fine books, etc.  They often hoard money, sniffing it and smelling it.  You find a lot of them working as CEOs, heads of corporations or running governments.   Many Capricorn women like to shop and are good at it.  They thrive on organization and planning.  They're not as comfortable with spontaneity - which Sagittarians are.  Try having a family gathering with great numbers of those two signs present.

Adding Ophiuchus as a 13th sign in the zodiac and bumping everyone around with their sun signs won't ever change that!

Richard - And no self-respecting Capricorn would handle it any differently.  You'd have to shave off your mustache and beard if you did. .LOL

John - Why don't you start with giving me the day and the month you were born, and I'll see if I can provide more insight for you.

Elizabeth - I can actually see you being a little more Gemini than you might think.  Geminis have flexible minds, and can bounce multiple ideas around at one time.  They are often found in journalism realms.  But, I think you are far more Cancer than that.  Generally Cancers are home loving.  I note that although you are a workaholic, that you work mostly from home, and have wonderful Adam, who cooks and tends to a lot of your needs:-)

Again, nothing has changed for Western Astrology, things are as they were.

Frank - I think you will be the same person you have been all along.   Nothing really has changed.  The constellations are the backdrop of where the planets are.  But Western astrology is seasonal, therefore, you think you may now be an Ophiuchus, but you  will likely remain a Sagittarius.

Myrl, thanks for your post.  Nice to hear this is an interest of yours.  I enjoyed seeing this come up in mainstream news because it raised that awareness again in a fun way, of our connectedness to the earth, moon, stars, etc.    But I must say I have always enjoyed being a Libra on the cusp of Virgo.

Couldn't help but think of this song....open here!

Gloria - I have a daughter and a grand-daughter which are Librans.  I also have a son-in-law, who is.  They are the refined ones in our family.  I get a kick out of my daughter and husband (both Librans).  They debate each other as if it is blood sport.  Some watching think they are arguing, but they are not.  I can tell the difference.  Libra natives are usually fair and balanced.  Can debate both sides of an issue.  A lot of them are attorneys.  Virgos are the work horses of the zodiac.  They work for the sheer joy of it.  If I were going to create a company.  I'd want a Capricorn running it, and all the workers to be Virgos.  I'd want the treasurer and book-keepers to be Taurus natives.

Myrl,

My kids have never seen this Cappy without a mustache, and never will. Makes my Italian nose look too big.

Rich - Italian noses are just fine. . .Afterall, the Italian artists created their masterpieces, with Roman noses. . .Michelangelo, Bernini, Raphael, Da Vinci.  But I think your beard and moustache are great too.

I heard about this on NPR recently ... and while the subject was interesting, when asked about his sign, the reporter confessed: Vegetarian!

Hi Myrl, when I first heard about this on the local news, they more or less indicated "everyone had to change signs"  I'm thankful that's not true, we get attached to thinking we are______________.  So I'm a Libra, maybe I'll read both horoscopes - "just in case"  LOL

Mary - I'm not changing my sign, for the reasons mentioned in this blog.  Mary, I can look at you see your Libra qualities, and see it in the refinement of your postings.  I really do agree with many Western Astrologers that we are more tied to the seasons.  Again, if you go to Stonehenge on Summer Solstice, you will see the sun peak across its designated spot, just like it has for 5000 years.  It is all about our perspective from here on earth.  This morning when I reviewed a number of charts I have done for folks over the past two decades, this new discovery doesn't fit them at all.  The old system put in place by the Babylonians continues to work.  I'm not going to be reading two horoscopes for myself.

Gloria - I just listened to your song.  I just knew someone had to come up with that tune one more time:-)  But the song is true, in that so much about astrology has to do with what the planets are doing in the sky, while interacting with one another, and our birth planets.

Ann - It is amazing how many have written to say they are now Ophiuchus natives.  That means they were, and still likely are Sagittarians.  Don't let what is going on with the constellations affect what the planets do for you here on earth:-)
