Your Home is Your Home

A few years ago, when the housing market was sizzling hot, everyone talked about how their home was a fantastic investment.

Those people talked about how a home that sold ten years ago had quadrupled in value over the last five and wish they bought more.

Many “real-estate entrepreneurs" owned several rental properties, most financed with ARMs, and were making a “killing” on the rents and appreciation. They were looking at their paper riches and marveling at how wonderful homeownership was.

Then the housing market stalled. ARMs reset. People were in rough shape.
Those who overextended learned something the prudent have always understood…your home is not always the “sure-thing” investment.
There are many benefits to owning a home and I’m a huge fan of it, but don’t justify buying a home by thinking your home is a great investment.

It is, however, a place to live, a place to make your own. It’s a place to put down roots, a place to raise a family, and a place to grow old in. Your home is your home... it’s just not an investment.

Always remember, it’s more important than an investment...it's your home.

Nicely said, MJ.  The current economy definitely has struggles, but hopefully we all are taking away some valuable life lessons from this.

Hi, to somewhat of a degree you are right, but I would like to add that real estate is still and will always be the best investment in America.  Homes over time will prove that.   Did you mention the stock market in your article? Or retirement avenues?  In the short term, I agree with you, but time will tell us again, that owning real estate is and always will be the best investment,  I apologize for not totally agreeing with you.  Good luck in 2011

You hit that right on the head, we need to get back to buying a home for the right reasons, like our parents did...a warm place to spend the cold winter, raise a family, sit down and eat dinner together, spend time together, a place for children to grow up and leave one day and then bring the grandkids back to visit...from their own home. Wouldn't that be sweet!

@Kristin...thank you, learning lessons is always a key ingredient to growing

@Don...Thank you for your comments. I did not mention the stock market, that wasn't the point of the post. As a return on investment whether real estate or financial markets, timing is key.  I'm grateful for for buying Ford & Bank of America stock in March '08 (Ford over 500% return & BofA over 200% return) in less than 2 years...hard to do that in this real estate market.

@Jeanne...thank you & you are exactly correct, in my opinion.  I love spending time with my family in my home.
