Recently, Chesterfield, Missouri Interim Mayor Barry Flachsbart was interviewed about his thoughts reflecting on 2010 and the future for the city of Chesterfield. Here were his thoughts:
Main accomplishment in 2010: Maintained city services at the same high level, even in the light of significantly adverse financial challenges. Along with this has been the accomplishment of positioning ourselves for the future. We are going into 2011 with a balanced budget and no cutbacks in services.
Biggest challenge in 2010: Clearly, the financial issues. But the staff and the city council, especially the members of the Finance and Administration Committee of the council, our city administrator, and our director of finance and administration, have worked tirelessly to stay “on top” of the changing situations and I think we can say that we have “weathered the storm” of 2010.
Goals for 2011: To continue our fiscally conservative approach to providing excellent services in a very economical manner, maintaining the flexibility to react to uncertainties as needed. We should also note that 2011 will be the year in which many of the parks and recreation projects, approved by taxpayers earlier, will come to fruition. Our amphitheater along Veterans Way, near the Sachs Library, will be completed in May and the trail system, which will eventually link both lakes in the area, will also be completed by next summer. Our Riparian Trail is also taking shape – when completed (not fully in 2011, however), it will link the urban core of Chesterfield with the Chesterfield Valley.
It is good to see that the city has been able to keep the budget balanced and no cutbacks in service. During these challenging economic times, not every municipality can make the same claim.
