I know you don't want to, but why you should be on Twitter

Why you should be on TwitterYesterday we marked our 200,000th member here at ActiveRain and I got the honor to throw a pretty dang cool party on Twitter.  With more than 1,200 tweets from AR members, we celebrated with eachother and gave away prizes.

One of the coolest parts of the day (although there were many cool moments) was seeing so many members that created a Twitter account that very day and starting to really like using Twitter. They learned by doing and jumped right in, and did fabulous at it!

It made me realize that although Twitter has now rivaled Facebook for much more than a year, many people are scared of trying it out or just don't get the point.

My goal: Get you on to Twitter...and make you like it!

Why you should be on Twitter:

1. Contrary to popular belief, it's not just a waste of time.  I'll even show you how to save time in a later post.

2. You get to share information with your followers and in turn you'll learn a great deal of information from who you follow (much like here in the 'Rain)

3. It's one more way to get your face out there in front of people.  If you google search "ActiveRain", guess what comes up? In the number five slot, is our Twitter account.  And that's competing with all your millions of amazing posts.

ActiveRain's Twitter Account is #4

4. It's another way for you to brand and share your personality. I keep hearing on ActiveRain how buyers found an agent based on their blog, what they wrote and how they liked them.  This is another way for people to discover how much they like you and trust you.

5. Maybe you just like the straight facts*:

  • 27% of the 106+ million users log-in everyday.
  • 25% of users follow a brand
  • 48% are in college, while an additional 28% have college degrees.
  • 57% of users are between the ages of 26-44.
  • 31% make between $51K-$100K.

Are these the people you are trying to reach?  Is it part of your business plan to build your online presence and strengthen your reputation?

I'll post tomorrow the step-by-step on how to set up your Twitter account.  It's easy and I'll even share some tips and examples that have helped me.

Grrrrrr.....you make sense....but i still think of Twitter as something for my teenagers.

Like many other things in my life...I have to take the medicine and give it a better effort.  Thanks for the shot in the arm.

Kelly,

We were very fortunate to have a Twitter Power User as a client. He really helped us make some adjustments from ActiveRain blogging to Micro blogging.  I would encourage every agent to take advantage of the abundant resources you provide here and include Twitter in their social media marketing.

Best,

Steve

Twitter is definitely a great way to be in front of a large audience. The "straight facts" you shared should probably be reason enough for folks to start tweeting.

Kelly - by hosting on the party yesterday on twitter that was brilliant - I really think many who nay-sayed twitter but gave it a shot for your special day will now think more about it after seeing it in action. Let's see 57% age 26-44... hmmm can you say good homebuyer ages! Not just for teenagers. I like to follow people who are cutting edge. They help to push me to be where they are. Not a waste of time at all! I added quite a few to follow based on those participating in yesterdays #AR200K celebration. good post - I'm twitter @techzmx <- that's me :)

Hi Kelly.  Nice to put a picture with a lovely voice on the phone.  I can't wait to see your post for tomorrow.  I don't know Twitter and am one of those that have shied away from it.  My business is on it through other sources but I can't communicate within it or through it.  I can't wait for the help!  ;)  I think I missed that party cuz I don't know about that hash thing or the AR200K.  I'm relying on you to help me out.

Jason - I thought the exact same thing two years ago.  Then I did my research.  And after surfing around on it for a while, I figured out what an amazing tool it is.

Robert - One step at a time.  Don't let the list get too long, or nothing will ever get done.

Steve - Smart to get help from your client.  Just being shown how-to by someone that's got a great knowledge of it, will speed up your learning curve and you're more likely to stick with it!

Craig R. - Thanks so much for the email today and sharing with me a post you wrote about Why you should be Twittering.  Such a good read and I want to share it with everyone on this thread.  It really expands on what I touched on here.

Craig D. - That party yesterday was so much fun!  Thanks for adding to the conversation and for encouraging on those newbies!

Karen - I'll be sharing lots of basic twitter how-to's over the next week or two to help members just like you and we'll get you up and tweeting in no time!  Biggest advice, jump in and just go!  You'll love it.
