Working in the Office or Working From Home?

By

OK so I am definitely more dedicated when I am working in the office.  I need to be sitting at the desk working to make any kind of progress.  If I am at home I find a million other things going on to distract me.  I know alot of people are able to do the home thing and honestly at night while sitting on the couch with my laptop I can do great things with blogging and putting my listings on craigslist. I can even get my zing dings done. Working expireds and follow ups definitely have to be at the desk at work.

So what is it that sitting at that desk does for me? I think it is the psychology of it all.  If you are sitting at a desk you are working if you are sitting at home everything else is more important.  What is funny is I don't even have children at home to distract me.

So how many of you are able to work from home and what is the trick that you mentally can do to keep yourself focused?

Valarie, I too must go in...I have tried but I am easily distracted and think oh let me put this load of clothes in...oh let me iron this...oh I can vacuum and then answer this email....I agree, I know its all in my head!

Valerie, I have worked out of a home office for almost 29 years and can't imagine doing anything else.  One of my keys is getting dressed for the day and then coming down and sitting at my desk.  I always sit at my desk to work and there is something about sitting at a desk that makes you work.  The other thing that I NEVER do is turn on the television.  Sometimes I will have talk radio going in the background but it is not extremely loud.

Hi Valarie, I have a home office, and I am so much more productive at home than I ever was at my desk at my office.  I was more distracted with other people around!

I have a totally separate room, kindof a large room, with my desk, files more desks and printers etc.  I have a fabulous window view of the countryside and no tv in the office.

I can get distracted, by my sewing machine, but it's in another room!

I have worked from home since 1993.   Discipline is the key.

1.  Dress for business, starting first thing in the morning.

2.  Distractions are minimized.  We do not own a TV set.

3.  My wife is a former Realtor; she understands that this is not a hobby.

4.  Daily Schedule, Regular Calendar.

5.  A Dedicated Room, a True Office within my house.  Desk, chairs for clients, licenses and Fair Housing posters on the walls, computer desk, printer table, etc.   Nothing except Business occurs in this room.

6.  Children and Pets are not allowed in the office, sorry.

Its all the mindset....If you are dressed for work, make up on and jewelry, you are more in the mindset to work, than if you are in sweats and slippers...

Valarie - I can work at home in the winter months without any problem. It's those summer months that kill me.

Valarie,

I am split.  I work about 60% at home and 40% at the office.

I think I get more done at home, so I spend more time there.
